    25kg bags of potatoes?

I guess they are what my age group used to know as 56lb sacks of spuds.

    ;) Almost exactly the same; 56lb = 25.45 kg.;)

The new local Aldi's opens on my town on November 8th I can't wait! How sad is that...I go to the hospital for a check up on the same day and return to shop here...

:) If it helps to visualise, a 25kg sack of spuds stands about 2.5-3 feet tall.

I can just about move a 25 kg bag myself (I'm not an especially strong woman) by dragging it or lifting it a few inches with both hands as a direct pull vertically. 25kg would fill an ordinary wheelbarrow if shot out loose but not heaping above the gunwale, if that is making sense (it's late and I'm getting a bit fuzzy).

Can't answer re chicken feed bags as don't use them.

That's the size of bags in his shop - I must ask him again as it seems a horrendous price even for here!
My tatties came out of the ground the same size they went in - we were lucky to get a bucketful, and usually get a sack full from the small patch.

Ginger tony that's fantastic! Have never been in Aldi, shall have to have a visit when next I shop in the city.

:( That's a heckuva lot of money for a sack of spuds, WCS. It's unfortunate that people such as yourselves in the more remote areas have to pay a premium for their groceries but that seems an outrage. Esp as you have 3 to feed and 2 of them grown men.

I've read what you've posted previously about the distances you have to travel to access a reasonable-selection of shops. Do you have friends or family who visit you from those areas and would they be willing to have a standard instruction to Bring Tatties/ other items when they are coming your way?

One thing I noticed in the mountainous areas of Crete was that there was a lot of arrangements to move stuff about on the service buses such as parcels. It seems that when just about everyone in a society is poor, they're pretty imaginative in getting stuff done.

Years ago, I fetched a carload of stuff to Scotland from southern England in return for the petrol money. I was going anyway and this person's stuff needed to go, but this way was cheaper and it went from door to door. I re-filled the car's tank at their town and they paid me for the petrol and it was sufficient for the whole of the trip and back home again. A win-win situation

  • l done that big shop in aldis the other day as we went to another leading supermarket last week and when i came home id spent about £85 and came out with two dinners and then and there l decided enough was enough and so l will from now on use aldis. l actually like their fruit and veg and it last much longer than most supermarkets.
l think its prudent to go shop around as there are easier ways to feed your family well on a budget, people need to get over this brand name thing as well. My sisters kids wont eat anything from her thats not branded, when they are in her house but when they visit and l cook my nephews dont know the difference infact they say they love my cooking. I have started using the farmfood vouchers as well they save me a fortune when i bulk buy non frozen food such as tinned foods, milk bread, they also sell cheese yogurts, teabags. l keep my vouchers in my bag and use them when l need them. ln fact l got a woman £10 off her shop the other day by using one of my ff vouchers, the woman thanked me but was mortified about using a voucher but said she would do it her next shop. A tenners a tenner to me if you can save then why not we need to get over this snobbery and play the shops at their own game.

    Regarding potatoes.

Just got back from Tesco with 12.5kg of King Edwards for a total of 50p.

Can anyone tell me any other way of storing them other than using a paper sack or hessian sack please (haven't got either of those).

I can put them in a dark corner of the shed but not sure what to put them in, black bin liner, cardboard box?

An old pillowcase should do the job, or a cardboard box covered with something fabric would be ok too - you want to keep the light out but let air get in, so plastic is not suitable.

we buy maris pipers in 56lb sacks. there is a wholesaler here who also sells to joe public. and you can buy any weight of anything that you want - one cabbage, 2 lbs toms etc - and his sacks of maris pipers are around £8. bargain i think. they are almost £3 for a 5lb bag in morrisons.

and by 'we' i mean myself, my son and my daughter and we share them out. always get lots of fruit and veg there too. everything is always very fresh.
