95% of the time I have a smile on my face when I'm with my kids. Knackered and stressed is a state some parents choose to enter.

We had a Decathlon open late last year - my first visit in there had a choose a charity token slot box.

Had my 2nd visit in there today - the charity slot box has been replaced with a large easel displaying photos of each of the staff members who work there in plastic pockets. You put your token in the pocket of the staff member who has been most helpful to you during your visit. At 3pm, the winner had 3 tokens in!

  • As a representative of a small local charity I am extremely grateful for schemes like this. Waitrose donate £1000 a month from each store, divided proportionately according to the tokens in the tubes. Asda donate £200 to the charity with the most tokens and £50 each to the other two. We have received several donations from local stores which make a huge difference to the work that we do. Also we benefit greatly from the publicity that this generates, which also provides more awareness of the work we do and generates more referrals to our service (thereby increasing our need for funding!). And incidentally we are a children's charity and we don't always "win"...

This scheme seems to be very badly implemented. There is no information near the chutes in my local ASDA about under what circumstances one gets a green token or how much the charities will share.

I usually use all my own bags, and at other times I use some of my own bags. I've spent over £60 and not been offered one. The only time I was given one was from a staff member who was being trained!

no but you have to spend a certain amount before they offer you one.

Not in our asda, you get one every time you pay for anything.

I am amazed that some are complaining about a scheme that gives money to charities by the supermarkets.

The children love putting them in the slots and it raises awareness of the charities involved.

In our Waitrose they are in pots at the checkout and you take one if you want to.

Some people go all out raising money for worthwhile charities and good on 'em.
But people like me who don't have the time or energy to do so are very pleased with schemes like this which allow me to do my bit. In the same way we often have direct debits to charities to do our bit without compromising our family life.

I like the idea if big rich corporations sharing some of their profits made out of me with local good causes.. I think the original op is a massive grump.
  • The school I work in was offered the chance to benefit from ASDA's local charity. The tokens helped us to build a sensory garden for our severely disabled pupils, plus they donated some compost to us. Local groups benefit from the tokens, not the big charities. If you don't want to put your token in then don't - but please don't belittle their programme and act so immature about it!

I will look it up in a min online, but had one proffered to me the other day by a checkout person and was told to put it in some slot halfway up the store.
When I asked what for I was just told 'it's for charity'.
She was most unimpressed at my wanting further detail.
I declined to take it, I like to know why I'm doing things. This meant I was quite quite mad obviously for not just unthinkingly doing what I was meant to.
Could be the local Hunt Supporters charity for all I know (joke, joke, sort of.), and if she doesn't know why the heck she's giving them out, why the h3ll should I take one and put it in the slot like some good little drone? Plus if it's this 'schools' s-hyte, as the supermarket charity drives often are, I'm not interested - let the Goverment provide books for schools. B-lerdy ridiculous.
I give a lot to charities, in different ways, but this kind of thing just really gets my goat.
