Not allowed to change AOL broadband package

A friend who's husband left her 2 years ago wants to upgrade her AOL broadband deal. AOL will not allow her to access the account as it is in her husband's name. She has paid all the AOL bills since he left and is not under contract. How can she either get her MAC code quickly or get a better deal with another provider? AOL have told her that if she stops paying it could take months to get another service.
Any advice would be very welcome.

If they're still on speaking terms get him to complete a change of ownership form with AOL (actually TalkTalk).

Alternatively just take out broadband with another ISP, notify AOL of the cancellation and stop the DD. (Be sure to pay any reasonable outstanding bills via an alternative method). Note that there might be a charge from BT Openreach for a non-MAC change of ISP that AOL will likely pass on - probably about £25.

Don't put your trust into an Experian score - it is not a number any bank will ever use & it is generally a waste of money to purchase it. They are also selling you insurance you dont need.

I did that a few months back, the MAC came via email within a couple days with no begging phone-calls from customer services trying to make us stay.

Then hand the MAC to the new supplier, and wave goodbye to a slowly dying brand (I believe Talk Talk are trying to get rid of any "legacy" customers they inherited when taking over companies)
