Hi Gilly, with your Son trying so hard to find work and nothing coming of it, I would look at his CV and see if you can make it stand out more. There are examples on the internet or if you know someone who regulary reads CV's ask them to look at it. My DD is in Uni and got good advice there writing hers and she was saying earlier she has got an interview for every job she has applied for since, a good CV gets your foot in the door. Good luck to him, hope he gets a lucky break soon x

He has recently re-written it, I think the problem is it looks very sports orientated so anything in retail or the food industry may not be the best route.
  • Hi gilly,

If it helps your son, I've heard in the last couple of days that Arg*s, B**ts, and R*yal Mail are all recruiting now for temporary xmas jobs. I always think that if you get a foot in the door and prove yourself you can be kept on after xmas.

Also, if your OH and DS are sporty, do they have hoards of old kit etc that can be ebayed? Perhaps if you put it to them that they will have to give up their passions unless they help you raise the cash, they might 'find' some treasures to sell.

Hi OP - agreed, loads of shops are taking on retail Xmas temps at the moment and many wont ask for experience as long as you are eager and have some common sense / interpersonal skills! Most of these recruitment drives will be starting about now so get him into the nearest town centre ASAP, going into every shop.

His "sporty look" could be an advantage in certain types of shops like sports or fitness based places.

Have you looked at his CV? If he is a well presented and articulate lad then something doesn't sound right if he is applying for so many jobs and not even getting a sniff of interest.
Again, his Uni should have a specialised department that liaises with employers, and also helps students with their CVs.

A pt job during uni isn't just useful for financial reasons - a solid work history is a great asset when it comes to applying for graduate jobs.

Hi, I know exactly how you feel, my three big kids are my vice too, I'm skint, don't drink at all, don't smoke, but don't you dare suggest I cut back where my children are concerned!
I've got 2 at uni, one more to go next Sept and I pay their phones, insurances, books. I feel its my last act as a good parent to help them through this time, uni is very expensive and its my gift to them. I have made it clear, though, that when uni is over I need, yes need, some help back to clear my debts and create some savings.
But I have explained the food budget has got to be kept to, mine eat rediculous amounts too. So we have 3 cheap nights. We decide together which nights, but tonight we had jacket spuds and beans 'cheap' night, because Sunday we had beef stew which they love, but it is an 'expensive' night. This has stopped the moaning and I hope made them think about budgeting, and brought my bills down a lot. A go to Lxdl on pay day and stock up on a months worth of the things we have tried and lke, museli, tin tomatoes, mince, kidny beans, lentles etc too.
My shopping bill was 125.00 per week, is now about 80.00 for 5 of us.
I rang BT and just asked about reducing my bill, said I was ringing around, nice conversation, now I have the same package but for 18.00 a month less. Changed utilities and saved 38.00 per month.
So I can now come in on budget, that feels so good.
Just sold my first thing on Ebxy :), 25.00 off my debt, that feels so good. More to go now, this is my thing to concentrate on this month.

Basically, I started what you have planned to do, one thing at a time, grocery bill first, chip away, chip away, and you'll be amazed how things can add up.

My youngest JUST got a saturday job at the garden centre, christmas staff, so as long as she sticks at it (she better!) she has now got something on her CV so though a garden centre was not her first choice, maybe this will help get a retail job she says she would prefer. Garden centres need lifters and carriers so the sporty thing might be a plus here if strength and health are highlighted?

    Good luck
  • Just a quick note: Royal Mail xmas jobs are ok, and easy to acquire as long as you have a pulse and the right attitude ;) The problem for your son might be the contract period. He'd need to be free from 1st week of December, so that might clash with term time... Apply via Royal Mail website, follow the 'jobs' link (I know, obvious...) but he'd need to get his skates on as they're already booking interviews.

Today has been the first day of the new us ......

The meal plan is written for the month based on what is in the freezer, fridge and cupboards.

All other supplies have been checked, toiletries, laundry, cleaning and we only need dishwasher rinse aid.

The household plan has been written with jobs for all 4 of us, including our son's GF and she is on board

Have called Sky and requested they check our broadband supply as of the opinion that we are not getting what we are paying for. They are now monitoring our line to see if they can do anything.

Have researched other alternatives for broadband and could get BT infinity for £20 per month, saving around £20 per month, plus £35 Quidco and £50 Sainsburys gift voucher. Just need to call them tomorrow to see what speed they can deliver.

Have checked energy supplier, but we are locked in for another 18 months

DS has moved the direct debit for his phone over to his account
He has applied for a student account which offers £50 cashback
He has transferred the funds we have given him for the first two weeks of Uni back to our account

Tomorrow we move to the next phase, closing down unused accounts, reviewing credit file, check for any offers available

    So far this morning -

Four letters written to close unused accounts

Credit file checked, note made on calendar to check again in one month as will hopefully be updated with closures

Checked energy supplier - only tied in now till January but compared on USwitch and we are on the best rate for us

Online banking all up to date

Had two NSDs, but needed to order a dishwasher part today so £10.64 spent

Found 5p in a jacket I have not worn for a while, so that has gone in the piggy bank :j

Since I moved into this address, I've found over £15 in clothes hanging in the wardrobe.

Whenever I'm skint, I check the pockets again, but haven't found anything recently. :(

I guess I've already found it all.
