Most universities have some sort of job shop on campus. has he enrolled there?
Is there any problem with him working Saturdays because of his coaching? If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing0 -

Not whilst there is breath in me, I am so anti mopeds/motorbikes, lost two good friends in bike accidents
First one killed by a drunk car driver, coroner said he would have been okay if the bike had been more powerful to get him out of danger
Second one - T-Boned0 -

The cost of the car is
Insurance - how much £2500? pa
Purchase price depreciation /loan cost £?????
Road tax £x?
Maintenance £x?
MOT £x?
I am going to guess that this little lot comes to a LOT more than £1140 for the bus fare 4 days a week for 30 weeks?
Course is 42 weeks, so £1596 if travelling by bus
Below is for 52 weeks
Insurance £1300 pa fully comp, multicar policy
Road tax £130
MOT £54
Maintenance £200 pa
Depreciation - not sure
Basic running costs apart from the depreciation only £100 more than the bus, two days a week goes from Uni straight to coaching which he could not do if travelling by bus, options for evening work would also be limited. Finishes Uni at 1800, first bus is at 1905, would be home at 2040.
His friend will be donating towards petrol costs as he is having lifts until he passes his driving test. Then they will car share.0 -

I know and appreciate this, but my personal experience is that cars are safer0 -

Will ask him tonight about the job shop?
He could work Saturdays but as already mentioned he is still waiting to hear from 23 applications, so it is not for the want of trying0 -
You've left fuel costs, out of the car running costs.
BTW. I trust he is correctly declared on the policy?0 -
Thank you to those who have confirmed that our son is the reason we cannot clear our CC debts as fast as we could.
He is trying everything he can to get through Uni without debt for him and us.
After only getting one grade C GCSE, he got into Uni with the maximum number of UCAS points so we are very proud of him. I have not mentioned through this he is not actually my son, but is my step son. His "real" mum does not help him at all, so if it takes a little longer to pay the debts off so be it, he is worth it and once he qualifies as a physiotherapist it will be more than worth it.
I will however take on board the comments regarding meal planning, online shopping, shopping around and household planning and thank you all for those comments which I have been aware of since joining MSE, but as with most of us go by the way side.
I have just done a snowball and apart from our loan which was for home improvements, we should be CC debt free by August 2013 - that is my target for now.
Thank you all again0 -

The £50 fuel each week covers Uni and he puts in extra for all other fuel costs so with his friend contributing half the Uni fuel it is still not that much more.
Very definitely correctly declared on the policy
MAIN DRIVER, with me and his dad as additional drivers.
