QUOTE=RAS;56222171]have you made sure that he is using all the studenbt discounts that he can to gwet cheap travel? Is there a local travel card for students?

My travel is £99 per month; the same journey on a student card is just over £20 per month. The daily cost is £7.[/QUOTE]

I am sure it must feel like I am batting back everything you say.

We checked all the options for travel and his car is the cheapest with a pre-paid parking permit.

To get to Uni by car is 30 minutes journey, local bus is 1 hour and 40 minutes each way and there are no concessions on it. It is £9.50 so £38 for the four days he is there. If you include the travelling time this limits his options for getting an evening job.

He does take a friend in and he has offered to car share once he has passed his test, so this will cut costs.

Is the friend sharing the fuel costs?

Why are you paying for your son when he gets student grants for his tuition and to 'live on' even basicloan to live on is alot if you live at home. My daughter shares a flat but manages on her basic maintenance loan and has some savings. Shes very money savvy and a member of MSE but still has fun evenings and days out, clothes etc but usually with a voucher 2 for 1 or discount card, voucher etc.

Sorry you need to get abit tough on your son to pay abit and be responsible with his money (spending your cash on his G/F indeed) but seriously I know you love ,care and want to support and treat him but the best thing he should learn is how to be money aware and responsable and that means paying for some of the things he takes for granted now.
Your husband may be harder to change mine is work in progress:rotfl:

His grant does not give him enough to be able to get to Uni and pay for all the other things.

His awarded grant is £3575 for the year, but we think it should only be £2843 but have queried it and they say it is right.

His outgoings are car, Cineworld Unlimited and he buys all his own clothes.

Fuel and parking for Uni is £50 per week, will decrease when his friend passes his test as they will car share

    Cinema £14.99 per month

He pays for his fuel, this is only his second week at Uni so we are having to subsidise him for the moment as the grant is not even in his bank account yet.

His GF helps with fuel costs and socialising when they go out

He is taking on his phone bill when the grant comes in.

To stay in halls was £5542 for the 42 weeks, so the grant does not cover in any shape or form before you add food, books etc on, so staying at home was the best option.

For years 2 and 3 he is hoping to get a friends network to house share

He will be, but like our son is still waiting for the student grant to hit the bank account.

Not sure what he would have done otherwise. We don't know the lad to ask.

Is there a pub he goes to often enough to know the manager/landlord? If he does then 20 minutes instruction will be enough for him to understand how to pour a pint and the m/l might provide him with a reference.

That's how I got my first bar job as a student.

When I was younger I got a shop job by starting at one end of the High St and walking to the other with a load of CVs and asking for the manager. That worked too.

He does not go to the pub so no option there, he has asked in clubs but no joy

Shop jobs - he hands out CVs once a month every month, with a covering letter which suits that shop but no joy

He is registered with temp agencies

He is currently waiting to hear back on 23 applications.

So, atm, he's getting free travel, courtesy of your son?

It would appear so, will speak to son later to see what is happening as this lad gets a bigger grant.

The cost of the car is

Insurance - how much £2500? pa
Purchase price depreciation /loan cost £?????
    Road tax £x?
    Maintenance £x?
    MOT £x?

I am going to guess that this little lot comes to a LOT more than £1140 for the bus fare 4 days a week for 30 weeks?
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing
  • Any chance your son could replace the car with a moped/small motorcycle?

Can he volunteer in a charity shop for a few weeks of saturdays, to get retail work experience to help his CV?

Cam he go into a few local pubs (does your DH have a regular pub he can ask?) and ask if he can work a couple of evenings for free to get some bar work experience?

    Might help his CV.

Also - are there any bars, shops etc on campus?
