Seville & Florence are on my wish list, friends say both are beautiful.

They are both lovely SnowBelle. Florence is very expensive though. If anyone does go there, it's worth checking out the Suggs's tour of Italy programme that's been airing on Sky Arts recently, just for this city. It was by far the best of the series and has some lovely insights into what you'd see.

Thinking about it, I'd possibly also consider Naples for Sorrento or Amalfi with a side trip to Pompeii and/or Herculaneum.

Id definitely book 3 nights and not 2.

If you can book a bit later than Feb, so the weather is better.

Or pick somewhere like Bruge which is nice in the winter, and not a beachy type place like Barcelona.
  • where did you stay in athens? x

again quick look and seems 3 nights 24th-27th deb going manchester- athens
staying in centrotel hotel (3rd on tripadvisor??) about £250 in total?

I stayed at the intercontinental - this hotel was beautiful we booked it through last minute.com secret hotels. It was only about 129.00 for the 3 nights. I've also posted a similar link to the Marriott hotel which is not to far the intercontinental but has amazing deals. some people have said its abit far out but it's not. It's literally 2 stops away on the tram. To the centre. Also with the eBay deal you can buy the voucher then work the flight details out as the voucher is flexible for 1 year.

Anyway I'll stop rabbiting on now :) but I'm sure your mum will love wherever it is you decide to choose for her stay.

Oh an centrotel is consistently high rated on trip advisor I walked past their many times and although not as plush as the intercontinental or Marriott it don't get those high reviews for nothing. Good luck an happy planning.

Id vote for Florence. Its so beautiful and all close to hand. Best tip is to fly into Pisa. Catch train right outside airport door (and I mean right outside - about 20 footsteps) into Pisa Centrale. Put baggage into left luggage. Spend half day at Pisa viewing the Tower and surrounding area. Hope on train again into Florence (no more than an hour). Everything is SO central and their are great views if you walk up into hills or a catch a bus. All info available about Florence on Trip Advisor in the forums and if you put Florence into google images some gorgeous photos come up. Rome is big and spread out. Florence all at your finger tips. make a lovely weekend!
  • Vienna? Bratislava? Ljubljana? All good city break destinations. Of the suggestions already made I'd go with Berlin, Bruges, Budapest or Cologne. The Cologne Carnival will be on sometime in early February which might mean cheap accommodation will be hard to come by though.
  • I love Krakow, easy to get to from airport, a lovely city, walkable and extremely cheap! Might well be a bit cold in February though (actually, a LOT cold).
So...my vote would go to Alicante. Somewhere you usually drive through going to one of the big coastal resorts, but a beautiful city in it's own right.
Lovely beach, plenty of restaurants and history and the weather should be temperate.
We stayed at the Melia Hotel and had a beach view, lovely.
    Normal people worry me.

Yes, I forgot to mention Alicante earlier. Most Brits just land at the airport and head straight up the coast to Benidorm but the city itself is fantastic - a nice beach, lots of nightlife and it still retains a very Spanish feel rather than the "Costa Blackpool" further up the coast.

The other good news is that BA are resuming direct flights to ALC after pulling out of the airport a couple of years ago.

What about malaga? Best bet for warmish weather and with a train literally outside the airport to take you to different resorts within 30minutes or stay in malaga itself and visit the Alcazaba and also the Picasso museum. there are lots of lovely restaurants and bars withinmalaga itself or travel 10 minutes on the train and visit the lovely Carihuela area of Torremolinos. you can get really cheap flights with ryanair from Manchester or Liverpool
  • Tallin, Estonia was fab at Christmas - cold of course, but the old town is lovely, it's not expensive, and you can also go as a foot passenger (EUR10 each) on the ferry to Helsinki. Don't know why I didn't mention it before!
