Why worry about it, RIM will be dead within a couple of years, if that.
  • Why state this when it is nothing remotely like the situation in question?
You did not walk into a store in the UK, and the website that you purchased from may not even be based in the UK.
It could well be in the US or somewhere in the far East and is set up to provide downloads to customers all over the world and they may not determine the selling price until you state where you live and currency that you will be paying in.

I personally feel it is... as the apps are listed in $ in the UK version of the site whilst viewing it in the UK. The price is determined by the one displayed.

So xxxxxx xxxxx you are in xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx and comparing UK prices versus US prices? Or are you an alter ego or an imposter?

And as has been stated you make no mention of different tax regimes!

First I'm a British Citizen. Secondly I spend at least half the year in the UK. And finally it make no odds where I am from is I wish to champion unfair practices. I have made no secret of where I currently am, and have already mentioned it in another thread.

Alter ego or imposter... you have the wrong end of stick! Not sure what your problem is.

I'm here asking for advice. All I'm getting is tough luck, idiot customers should read the small print, stupid customers should expect to deal with confusing sales tactics and it is their fault if they can't deal with that.

I'll deal with honest opinions and discuss them. Advice is what I am here for. Thanks to those who have offered advice, but it seems a little too defensive and 'who do you think you are' here for my liking.

There has been one or two good comments, have given me food for thought. Thank you.

The letter is way too long with irrelevant detail - why would the recipient wade through that to understand what you are complaining about.

You're not writing on behalf of the petition - it has no standing of itself, it is not an organisation.

Are you complaining about overcharging (difficult to win, they can charge what they like in different markets) or confusing pricing by showing in dollars and charging in sterling? Concentrate on what you are really concerned about, avoid side issues which confuse.

I'm sure they are aware that there is not parity between USD and sterling, not need to go on about it at length with pointless examples (or at all).

No need to mention conversion APIs - I'm sure they know how to implement a multi-currency trading site.

No need to include the list of threatened 'further action'.

Have you contacted Trading Standards about this to get their opinion? I would think action by them would have moire weight than a letter from the "representative of a petition" with, to date, 32 supporters.

Why is the organiser of this petition about US vs UK pricing shown as being based in Cairns, Australia?

Where I am from makes no difference. But for the record I'm a British citizen who spends almost half his time in the UK and Australia.

The letter is aimed at Blackberry. The petition is a few days old, and I will be perfectly able to see it reach thousands. It has not been promoted really and wasn't going to be done so till I had some opinion and contacted BB with said letter.

Perhaps for those of us without Blackberries you could post screenshots of each step of the purchase process so we can see for ourselves.

I would remove the pseudo legal language - it doesn't really add to the argument and makes the letter difficult to understand. Basically, you are just asking Blackberry to show prices in the local currency rather than defaulting to $ - have you tried just e-mailing them and asking them to do this? Could it possibly be that your changing location is itself leading to the problems you are having?

"For the record, $9.99 is currently equal to £6.19 (not £10.00). You are charging UK customers at a rate of about 162 percent over that of US customers."

This is a rate of 62% over that of US customers a rate of 162% over would be £16.22

The charge is $16.22 (£10.00), and is thus is set at 162% of US customers for a $10.00 app.

    Thanks for your comments.

Location isn't an issue, as I am acting as part of a group. Many of us in the UK. Individuals have contacted BB on many occasions and are fobbed off.

My main concern is the listing of products in $ in the UK and switching to £ when checking out. As you may have gathered, the numerical value not changing, just the currency symbol.
