Savings for grandchild living abroad

I would like to open an account for a grandchild living abroad. Unless I have passport or original birth certificate I can't open a tax free child account. What would be next best thing to save the odd birthday money etc?

How much tax would you actually pay if you just kept the money yourself and gave it to them when they turned 18? Why can't you just give the money to your own children?0 -
As a variation, how about £25 a month into bare trust in an investment trust?
