Help needed: advise on organisations who can help support rehoming my dog in the nw

  • They have had squabbles in the past over territory but this is obviously the first time one if them has been hurt by it. Cross hasn't had any change of behaviour and she had her yearly check up last month so don't think she's poorly

This does not need to be a huge problem, certainly not one that should have you rehoming the dog so quickly.

Is the dog insured? If so find out if the insurance will cover a behaviourist, there are ways to make this situation work and have two happy dogs that live together calmly!

Alternatively, you could post here and ask for advice, I believe qualified behaviourists are members there: http://dogpages.org.uk/forums/index.php?showforum=4

There are so many dogs in rescue at the moment, rehoming really should be an absolute last resort.
  • The organisations that you've left messages with would all love to help you out, but doubtless they are totally overun at present. Until laws come in to stop people breeding, and really get the number of dogs (and cats) under control, the situation is not going to improve.
DONT BREED OR BUY WHILE HOMELESS ANIMALS DIE. GET YOUR ANIMALS NEUTERED TO SAVE LIVES.
  • Is your cross neutured? Not too sure if its a girl or boy. After a season they can become territorial/possesive.

Is there a pattern to her territorial/possessiveness, if so maybe you could eliminate that.

Have you had chance to have a rethink at all OP?

Reading your posts again it sounds more like resource guarding than anything else and there's tons of help out there for this particular issue, its quite common and can usually be overcome.

We're still looking at rehoming, our other dog is now very wary of our cross which seems to have exasperated her territorialness. Fortunately a local rescue is providing us with advise and support and we may have already found a good home for the cross. Fingers crossed it all works out

I don't think any of the previous posters truly have experience of what it is like trying to keep two dogs apart!

Rehoming may be the best option. I'm glad to hear you're getting help and just wanted to say that even if you don't take the dog in to the rescue they could always add them onto the website as a dog needing a home. It'd save them space too.

Actually, a lot of us have experience with resource guarding in multi dog situations. I would never have considered giving one up for such a minor reason but we can't make other people live by our standards.

OP, I think its a real shame, but I hope your dog finds a wonderful loving forever home and I'm glad you're getting help from a good rescue.

You can post a private rehoming ad up on the Dogpages forum - http://www.dogpages.org.uk/forums
    Ditto on Dogsey - http://www.dogsey.com/dog-forums.php

Both will also be able to offer advice on the situation if you feel able to try to work through it. I have had personal experience of dogs not getting along but much more severely from the sounds of it and I do think rehoming can be the best and safest move for everyone in some cases, but it can often be worked through too.
If it's to do with resource guarding then I'd recommend this book
    http://www.amazon.co.uk/Mine-Practical-Guide-Resource-Guarding/dp/0970562942

And on the issues of multi-dog households, this one is meant to be good
