HELP PLZ...Drain blocked by tile adhesive

  • Ok, so it's definitely a gully, I assume it has a downpipe from your roof flowing into it? Are there any other pipes running into it? Is this likely to cause you a problem or risk of flooding when it rains? The age of your property would likely mean that the surface water and sewage drainage systems would be separate. In this case, your surface water will either flow to a surface water main drainage pipe line, or to a soakaway in your garden. Can you speak to a few of your neighbours and see if any of them have any idea what happens to their surface water? Someone may know whether it is soakaways or mains. Are you end or mid terrace? I have worked on numerous terraced properties of a similar age to yours and it was not uncommon for the surface water drains to connect blind (no manhole access) to a long run of pipe work right down the terrace, usually with very few access points. The sewage systems always had better access, usually in each garden due to the higher likelihood of blockages.

You say you have a heavy duty manhole cover in your front garden, which way does your sewage drain flow at the rear of your property?

Sorry for all the questions, but as I said previously, without trying to visualise what your property is like, it's extremely difficult to advise. Having re-read your earlier post, I would certainly not advise you to pour any sort of acid down your drain. Is it possible for you to post any pictures of your set-up?

As myself and Keystone have said, it really does sound like you need to get a professional drainage firm in to have a look.

so you washed tile adhesive down a storm drain you do realise its meant for rain water and not household waste

if you have no inspection chamber for your storm water pipe in your garden and your rain water pipe is linked to the rest of the houses connected to your house in the terrace, there may be a rodding eye in one of the end houses gardens

your best option if possible is to dig out and remove the bottle gully that you poured the adhesive down. Once its disconnected you will be able to get some rods down the pipe, push rods down the pipe till you hit the blockage place some tape on the rod to mark how deep it is, remove all rods, then lay out along line of pipe to locate blockage then its a case of you know how far the blockage is and is a case of digging down and cutting section out and replacing

although you could be very lucky and maybe the blockage is only in the gulley

Sorry the heavy manhole cover at the front of the house is square not round, my mistake.
My house is mid terrace, 3rd one in from one side and 5th from the other.
There are no other pipes going into it, the gutter pipes are not on my house but on the houses either side of mine so maybe they are connected to the drain in their gardens?

I will take some photos, how do i post them in here?

Thanks all for trying to help.
  • If your neighbours are approachable I would have a chat with them. If you work out the direction your sewage flows in, i.e. which end terrace it heads towards, check that neighbours rear garden, with their permission of course to see if they have two inspection chambers, one for sewage and one for surface water. This will tell you if there is another line of pipe work for the surface water on your terrace. If the gully doesn't take the roof water, what water does it take? Run off from a patio or pathway?

As rxbren says, you could dig the gully out and remove it to allow access to the pipe work. The adhesive may have just blocked the swan neck in the gully although I'd be suprised if it hasn't gone down the pipe aswell. If you can get some rods in there digging it up would be a very last resort if you couldn't clear it. Just a word of caution if you do use rods and they're the cheap plastic ones, make you sure you only twist them in the same direction they do up, i.e. clockwise. The amount of jobs I go to where people have forgotten this and lost all the rods down the drain!!

As a relative newbie myself I can't help you with posting pictures, but I'm sure it's relatively straightforward :)

Ask your water company what you should and shouldn't use drains for.

    Hi everyone...

I have a drain in my garden, this is near a manhole cover (which is the sewage drain) but its not connected to it.

Anyway, I did a very stupid thing and washed away the remains of tile adhesive down this drain and now its blocked. :o

I have put on a pair of gloves and soaked up all the water with an old towel and removed some of it as far as I can reach but now there is a bend... , tried using the pressure washer but that didn't work, went and bought a set of rods but no luck either. I was told to try some Hydrochloric Acid to dissolve it... does anyone have any idea if this works??? I'm getting desperate now and I cant afford to call out the experts.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

As you accept that you will have to get your hands dirty, in your position, I would try a "Drain Snake" or "Plumbers Snake" This is a flexible metal spring that you can use to work through the blockage. The decent quality ones cost around £10 or so - don't buy the pound-shop ones, they're not up to the job !
