transfering emails to new account

I need to transfer the whole contents of one email address (emails, pictures, etc) to a new address. I found a tool called "trueswitch" but although it seems to be free, they wanted to charge 29 dls. I did not trust the fact that this came up AFTER I had inserted my addresses and passwords, so closed it without further action.
Is there another way to do this, or a tool which is trustworthy?
Thanks!

You can do it yourself with something like Live Mail or Thunderbird, could you tell us what the two email providers are then we can go from there.

Thanks Jayme1! eh... don't know either... which is better/easier? Will google them in the meantime. One question: Apparently if you have a lot of mail it takes like 24 hours... do you need to keep your PC open all this time or the software just keeps working?

I use Windows Live Mail for emails and have my Gmail, Hotmail and O2 email accounts set up.

It's easy to transfer emails from GMail to a Hotmail folder, and I do it regularly.

Windows Live Mail doesn't take long to download, and the emails can be transferred in seconds.

There is no need for any additional software.

    Good luck

Thanks Libra! I want to transfer from one Hotmail account to another hotmail account.... I notice hotmail accounts can be: hotmail.com, live.com or even msn.com.... don't know what the difference is. Can you tell me how is the process of downloading from one address to the other one? The only thing I know is forwarding but doing so with every message might take me ages...

    Hi nikiya

If both emails are from the same Hotmail account and you just want to transfer between folders, this link explains and illustrates how to do it.

    http://www.webdevelopersnotes.com/tips/hotmail/move-emails-hotmail.php

However, from what you say, it sounds like you have two separate Hotmail accounts and you want to add emails from one Hotmail account to the other.

I would download Windows Live Mail from here

    http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-live/essentials-home

Remove ticks for the extra items which you don't want.

When Live Mail has been downloaded, go through the wizard and set up the two Hotmail accounts in the programme. Very easily done.

It's a great way of reading and writing emails, much better than going into the web server.

When you have completed the settings, all the emails you have will be downloaded at Live Mail.

Once there all you need to do is click on the email you want to move and drag to the folder you want to merge it into.

Logging off now, but if you need more help just say.

    Good luck

    Here's how to do it:

Install Live Mail which is part of Live Essentials if you don't already have it, this is Microsofts email client.

-After it is installed add both Hotmail accounts to it (select 'Accounts' on the ribbon bar and then 'Email')

-After both accounts have been added you should see them both down the left hand side, each has it's own 'Inbox', 'Sent', ect. (you may have to close and reopen Live Mail and you also may have to wait for the emails to download which will be indicated at the bottom, depending how many emails you have depends how long it will take)

All you then need to do is copy the emails from one folder to the same folder of the other one to do that:

-Click on one of the folders of the 'old' email (eg 'Sent' or 'Inbox') select some email (you can shift Click to select more than one).

-At the top of Live Mail under the 'Home' option is 'Copy to' click that and in the window that pops up select the folder of the 'new' email you want them in (most likely the same named folder of the old email)

The first copy start small say about 20 emails so you can see how it works then you can do bigger lots, if you do a massive amount while it is copying it may slow your computer down and it may look like Live Mail (or the computer) has crashed, it hasn't, just let it do its thing.
Most email accounts have protection that lock out accounts for 24 hrs if there is suspicious activity, this is what happened to me when I copied email from a Gmail account to a Gmail account, if that happens you just have to come back later to finish copying them.
When I did it I copied about 150-200 at a time and didn't have any problems apart from the 'look' of Live Mail crashing, I reckon you could do about 500 at a time with no problem, your internets upload speed will be the limiting factor esp. on emails with attachments, it's probably best if you do the copies when you also have other stuff to do away from the computer, then just come back and set more copying.

This method doesn't delete any of the emails from the old email address either so you always get a 2nd chance if you do anything wrong ect.

That should see you right :j

Thanks Jayme! Will try that... for what I understood you can do it in several batches, is that correct? meaning, some now, some tomorrow and so on? And you get two duplicated accounts? Can you still use the original one for instance?

Yep all that is absolutely correct, copy the emails over a few days if you want to and at the end you end up with two accounts with the same emails in them, this is why this method is also a great way of backing up email.
  • Incidentally, if you're sure that you distrust the program you downloaded at first, Nikiya, then I'd strongly suggest changing all the passwords for the accounts you typed into it.

Hello Jayme: I tried to install live mail but apparently I need to install the whole of Windows Essentials (or am I missing something??)... However, the site tells me I need to install Pack 2 and Windows Platform Update first.... is that so? I am a bit reluctant to install more than I actually need...
    Many thanks in advance!
