I made my comment based on what I would do were I in the same position - ring the people who would know the answer, and give it to me straight away, rather than post on a website and wait for 5 different answers.
All I can say is... *Yawn*0 -

He does not get the £1 a month charge though so it's not been an issue.
I would write to them enclosing the card, cut up, and then tell them you do not want to be a customer anymore and you want to close your account. You would also like to know what the £1 is for - does it say on the statement?
Hi thanks for your reply.
I have just checked my statement and it says CASH INTEREST.
It doesn't surprise me that they put the phone down when enquiring about closing the account, they are not the most helpful bunch in general are they! I'm going to issue them a letter by Recorded Delivery requesting for the account to be closed. If I do not receive a response, I will just take it to the Financial Ombudsman Service (FOS)0 -
Anyone who has to ask the question, how do I close my account on any forum should not really be put in the position of having a credit card in the first place.
A 5 year old child could tell you to call the company and it would be done. I believe this is just another made up post by some poor, sad uni student with nothing else better to do.0 -

How is phone them, being sarcastic?
You yourself say in the OPCan I close the account by telephone? Or is it best in writing?
So you clearly knew what you needed to do. I can fully understand why people get answers they do, with posts like this.
Yes this is a advise board, but think about it. Ask on a internet forum. Full of so called keyboard experts. Or ask the people who can give you the correct advise. On how to action the closure.
Yes. If you were having problems getting the result you needed. Then asking how other have managed to get it sorted would be Ok. But it sounds like you have not even tried.
Clearly the easiest way is on the phone. If you seem to be unable to get them to act on your phone request then send a letter.
If they keep hanging up on you, then put this in your letter under COMPLAINT. Meaning they can't ignore it. If you then don't get a reply within 10 days. You can raise it further with FOS. Although you would have to wait till 8 weeks are up. If they have failed to log and action your complaint then they will get a serious kick up the backside for failure of procedure.
