worse case put the stuff on CD and pop back when you have it :) (if you on Broadband)....you can also do Service pack 2 on a CD for afterwards (that one takes AGES to download on dial up)

he needs all those updates to close all the security holes

He could have trouble fixing the R1's and R3 until he alters one of his spybot settings.

The 06s show that he has got spybots 'lock the homepage' set to 'on', he needs to turn it off before trying to fix the ie settings.

If you find that the spybot setting is already set to 'off', then those two need to be sorted or they will prevent some of the fixes.

the 023 can be fixed aswell, its part of a network driver, but is damaged.

Does it give you a numeric code for the error?

In Internet Explorer click Tools - Internet Options - Advanced tab - untick 'Display a notification about every script error'. While you're there, also make sure the 2 x 'Disable script debugging' options are ticked.

there is no sign of antivirus or a firewall, we will fix that after the PC is clean ;)

shouldn't that be the other way round? sort out anti virus an firewall before cleaning the PC otherwise you're running the risk of infecting it again inbetween.
