Cancelling Sky-but what should I get?

Options
Had enough of paying out monthly for channels I'm not likely ever to watch so I have decided it might be time to ditch Sky.

Just thinking out loud-Assuming I go the Freeview route what would be the best set up to get that will offer the most channels?

Would I be better off just keeping my existing Sky HD box and aerial setup?
is there such a box that provides some HD channels too?

Cheers for any advice

Hi, you own your Sky + HD box. If you pull out your viewing card you can see which channels you will still receive when you stop subscribing. The record and playback function will be disabled.
You will continue to receive the BBC, ITV1, Channel 4 HD channels.

Your Sky viewing card will become a Freesat from Sky card, and include the odd channel that is free to view as well as the above.

If you want to record stuff without the expense of an aerial use your existing dish with a Freesat PVR.

    Thanks for the advice.
Would you know if it's possible to just keep my Sky+ HD box and pay £10 a month for the recording facility?

Yes, Sky won't encourage you to do this, but it's perfectly possible to have a subscription solely for the purposes of Sky+ recording functionality.
Only you can determine the worth of such an arrangement, though it's probably cheaper in the long run to buy a Freesat PVR.
  • Probably makes sense to get the minimum Sky package (£18ish?) and then get the free internet.
  • Personally i wouldn't be happy paying sky £10 just for a record facility. If this is how you intend to view tv long term it would be better to buy a freeview box with recording facilities. One other option could be youview which could give more than freeview in the long run.

Both BT and talktalk would provide a PVR box at a much cheaper cost than using a sky ne at £10 p/m but for those offers you would need your broadand with them. Thats probably not what your after so may not be the bet option.

You will also get 5HD too with a sky viewing card, it's encrypted but Freesat from Sky (what you will technically have) includes this with your viewing card.

Does this mean that for £10 I can retain the sky recording facility and use it on a Premier sports subscription for the ice hockey season?

On the face of it, paying a £10/month subscription to retain the Sky+ functionality should mean you could phone up to switch on a channel package at a moment's notice. I'd check with Sky before making that assumption though.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

No, you need a minimum Sky subscription package in order to purchase Sky Movies and/or Sport.
