Of course, the short term fix may be to realise that it's not actually cold at the moment and that most people don't need to keep their accommodation heated to the level of a warm summer afternoon!

Well yes, i agree there.. I know people who expect to be able to walk round their houses in shorts and tee shirt even in December! But there is a happy medium, you shouldn't have to bundle on coats and hats and duvets INSIDE the house, imho.

If the OP is cold, then they have been given some senible suggestions on how to stay warm.

I do understand what you're saying but I also believe that being cold can be a state of mind if a medical condition isn't involved.

As it is only September and the OP talks about being cold even with both the heating and the fire on, I do feel that this could be the case here. After all, it really isn't actually cold outside at the moment, even in Scotland.
  • I have never heard of the warm home discount. Can't believe I was entitled to £120 last winter and didn't know so didn't claim!

I've just applied to EON for mine for this coming winter. Thanks guys, maybe I can turn the heating up a degree when the time comes to turn it on now.

It's terrible really that the energy companies don't seem to advertise the scheme.. I only found out about it here. I had to laugh though when the lovely lady at nPower said to me "is it okay if we mark you as a vulnerable customer?"... I thought to myself.. my gawd.. if people who knew me could hear that.

I do know what you mean - the sun has set, you draw the curtains, settle in the armchair with a book or to watch TV and something (cosiness?) is missing....turn on the gas fire....?

That's the sort of thing I mean. Fortunately our electric fire is mainly for decoration as it does have the ability to light up without being actually used for heating.

Really - I am up North and I have had my windows open and no need for "heating and fire" like OP. Just wondered where they were.

Just been to the garden to feed outside animals and was fairly warm out there.

Certainly not enough to have heating and fire on full blast.

Not cold enough for you to need it on, but clearly cold enough for the OP. We're not all the same.

  • I found this while mooching about the Which website.

It is about the £130 grant, and contains lots of useful info about this and who is eligible. I hadn't realised that there is a 'core' group of people who must receive it from all energy companies which is those on guarantee Pension Credit, plus other 'vulnerable' people. Each energy company has their own definition of what constitutes 'vulnerable' and there is a link to a chart on this site.

I just remember that last year we pestered our energy company Eon to let us have the vouchers early which they did.

It's not cold enough for 99% of people I'd say an Autism doesn't mean you need extra heat. The problem isn't the cold weather it is her housing situation, as clearly it is not keeping draughts out and heat in!.
