You mentioning bad breath in a young cat makes me think of something that happened to one of our cats many years ago. It is possible that a grass seed or a blade of grass could have become lodged somewhere between the back of her throat and nose. The symptoms you describe are identical to what our cat had and when we took her to the vet, nothing obvious could be seen, just that her pallate was a little red. Anyway, a week later, the cat sneezed and the end of a 3 inch blade of grass shot out of her nose so I pulled it very gently (the smell was awful) and out it came and she was fine.
If she will let you, have a look in her mouth with a torch and up her nose, you might be lucky :)

Oh my god! floyd i wonder if thats what it could be?! I cant even look in her mouth without risking losing a finger (although she is much more complacent with the vet!!) so i cant see much further than her teeth - which all look ok as far as i can tell! cat dentist i am not!! maybe i should wait a week then and see how it goes, she has eaten again this morning (well the same small amount as usual) and gone out so she doesnt seem all that bothered, i think it distressing me more than her as i am so used to her meowing all the time!!

where on earth has her meow gone! i want it back!

im gonna call the vets this morning, and ask them what they think, fingers crossed i wont haveto take her in, my cats seem to be in and out the vets constantly this month costing me a small fortune!!

I seems likely that if her teeth look ok but there is a smell then it is something higher up. If it is grass or something similar, the smell will probably get worse and she will start producing greenish bogeys (just as humans do with infections). My rule of thumb is that as long as the normal functions (eat, drink, poop, pee) continue to be normal, I won't take my cats to the vet unless there is something very obvious like gummy eyes/nose or a cut. Cats have bad days just like humans where they can't be arsed doing anything!

Let us know what the vets say, I hope she is OK :)
  • There is a guide here for giving your cat a pill. Maybe you could try it to see into her mouth?

One of ours(Rupert) regularly loses his voice with no real reason. It normally coms back on its own(Rupe, has a LOT of other health problems and we nmentioned it to the vet who said that without outher symptoms we shouldent worry) However if you are worried and want mor specific advice then I suggest that you visit the Feline Advice Bureau wbsite. Its a wondrful source of reassurence and advice. They have pags and pags of the most excellent stuff. I am a member of the FAB and they are a total Godsend. If you type in FAB the site will come up. Hope everything goes well for you both.

thanks all, she seems a little better this afternoon. and def is eating (well ham and treats!) she is a stubborn mare who doesnt seem to eat very much, but would happily eat treats all day long. She has been drinking cat milk too, although i never see her drinking water, from a bowl or the fountain i have brought.

As much as her meow normally annoys me I am missing it now!! LOL (although not missing it at 3am!)

Im gonna hang on as she doesnt seem in pain, or that bothered, just a little more grumpy than usual! nothing too bad tho.

Don't want to alarm you, but did you think that the oily paws might indicate she has stood in something and licked it off and it has affected her throat?
