Christmas. It's 25th December this year

  • Still don't know why we celebrate Christmas anyhow as Jesus wasn't even born in December.
The total lack of logic of people celebrating the birth of someone they don't even care about, by getting into huge amounts of debt, getting drunk, and piling a huge amount of stress onto themselves and their families as a result, never fails to amaze me.

I like getting the "round robin" but I do know the people they are writing about, don't know why I would get them about people I don't know. I only get a couple from a family member and an old friend, I don't get to see either of them that often and a round up of what they and their children have done in the year is great. They do tell me good and bad stuff, wouldn't want to read just a showing off type thing.

I do put a collective letter in with cards to some people but like you said it's both good and bad news. How could it be anything else if its letting people know how the year has been?

Maybe they should just not spend, have a Christmas with no real presents, no nice food but be happy in the knowledge that they have some money in a savings account for a rainy day.

Personally I remain to be convinced (despite many people insisting that it is true) that anyone actually likes Brussels sprouts. I don't like stuffing or Christmas pudding either so basically that solves the problem. Lunch on Dec 25th is invariably a curry from a supermarket's ready meals cabinet.

I was with you until the "getting drunk" bit :)

I love sprouts and have them around 2 to 3 times a month, and my hubby likes them too and so do most people I know. We also like stuffing. We have a Sunday meal at the table most weeks. Family tradition maybe, but even so, pretty much everyone I know likes sprouts and stuffing. A supermarket curry for Christmas lunch sounds ghastly to me. But then, so does not celebrating Christmas. It's a time that has always been a time to look forward to in my family, for the last few generations, and I cannot imagine not celebrating it.

What is a 'missold Christmas templete letter?'

So you're involved with the Church, and yet you dislike/don't celebrate Christmas? #baffled

As I said, not everybody DOES this. Many people now spend little money and just enjoy the season for what it is: a time of peace and family and giving and receiving and seeing people you may not see all year round. We spend very little on Christmas, as just being with each other for 10 days or so, with no work, no school and no hassles and loads of Christmas films and Christmas tv, and nice Christmas food is enough. My daughter hardly wants anything and has never demanded anything, because this is the way we have raised her: to not want or need expensive things, and to understand that she can't always have everything she wants.

Also never got this 'if you love and care for someone, why not buy things for them at any time of the year? Why just Christmas and birthdays and Valentine etc?' Well, because that's what these celebration times are for, and it would be ridiculous to buy stuff at other times; that's why.

People need to get it it out of their head that EVERYone spends several thousand on Christmas and then spends all year paying it back. Like I said, we bought everything we need (food and booze,) out of our salary, and the presents will come out of some savings we have (and the money we need will hardly touch them.) We wouldn't DREAM of going into debt for anything. If we can't afford it, we don't have it.

Very heavily involved, I am a Lay preacher. I do go to church at Christmas but then I go whenever it's open. I do like the Christmas hymns (not the sentimental mush, but the theologically sound ones such as Hark the Herald Angels Sing (though actually the angels spoke, according to the Bible, but Wesley's original "Hark how all the welkin rings" is a bit dated now!)

What I object to is the false god who is the one truly being worshipped at this time of the year by the vast majority including in many churches (why on earth Christians feel the need to lie to their children on this matter is beyond me, though my parents did it too). This is the false god who is omnipresent (at least on Christmas night), omniscient, and rewards children on the basis of good works (though again, why so many parents insist on telling naughty children that Santa won't come this year if they are naughty, is beyond me)
