Can we do it? YES WE CAN!!!

Hi All

Had my lightbulb moment about a week ago but have only just got the guts to come on here and write about it

Have been reading the many diaries on here and now feel we are in a place where we can start our journey to become mortgage free!

A little bit about us, me, my OH and our 2 sons (13 & 5) moved into our home 16th December 2011 having lived at our old home for 11 years, OH works full time and I work part-time at weekends. We always wanted a detached and that's what we got :j at the cost of £160,000.
We feel this is the house we will be in for many many years. We were able to put down the 10% deposit from the sale of our old house but because of the cost of our new home we had to take the mortgage out over 30 years to make sure we could afford the repayments (what with having growing kids and all the things they keep needing)

We are on a repayment mortgage, which on the date of moving in was £145,260, with a monthly payment of £690
Because of it being over 30 years it means we would make our final payment when we are 67:eek: so we want to knock of as many years as we can.

Having done some figures, think making a yearly overpayment would work out best for us, so the plan is to OP by £1000 - £1200 a year if not more when we can

I'm not very good at keeping up to date with a diary but hope that I will with this one as I so want to put my name on the MF honour roll

Well here we go our start to becoming MF
Wish us luck x

  • Hey kaz00jay, I am starting off this MF journey at the same time as you so will subscribe to your diary so can follow your progress. I have been looking into ebay too - it seems a great way to not only raise some extra funds, but also reduce clutter at home.

Wishing you the best of luck! :)

  • Morning All

Well not to bad a day yesterday as was at work for half of it!
But did have to spend some money as youngest needed a new winter coat and OH needed some new jeans -£40 in total but the OH only went an got me a new handbag (really did need as mine is falling apart but still kept saying "it's fine" hate spending money on myself)

We also had to get my dad a birthday present (he turns 60 on Tuesday) got him a lovely watch should have been £65 but the shop had sale so got for £52, we did go out for a family meal (for his birthday) and was going to pay but lovely mother surprised us by paying for it all!!

Didn't win the lotto last night so no quick fix to MF life yet!! lol

Did sale 2 items on fleabay last night with more ending tonight (fingers crossed)

Well need to go get ready for work, shopping list ready for OH to go get lucky I work in a supermarket so get 10% discount (every penny counts)

    Morning all

OH did the shopping yesterday for us when I was at work and the good thing about him going is he only gets what's on the list :j the only thing is there was a couple of things I forgot to put on the list

Only sold 1 item on fleabay last night but it's still £5 to the OP pot. Good thing it's the 1st Oct so now have 100 99p's to list for free - guess what I'm doing today!!

Did get a bargain from work yesterday 2 packs of sausages that should have cost £2.00 a pack for only 29p a pack :T so guess what we are having for dinner tonight

Has payday was Friday today need to go to Farm Foods and fill the freezer and HB to get the toilettrees and cleaning products so may not be a NSD for me but going to get the items for the best price I can;)

OH away tonight so will save on heating - he has a bad habit of just turning the heating on if HE feels a chill, keep telling him to bloody put a jumper on!! MEN
Have to say he is behind us on trying to become MF but sometimes he just don't think

Well no good just sitting here things to do and money to make (the legal way no printing machines in the loft! :rotfl:)

Have a great day all and speak soon xx

  • Good luck on your journey I'm sure you will do well. :)

A couple of things to help you make a little extra cash:

Have a read up on Halifax/BoS reward accounts, you can have 1 in each name and 1 joint. By cycling 1k through them and out each month you can pick up £5 on each account as a reward. So this can net you £15 a month, £180 a year for a couple of minutes online banking (loads of us on here do this).

We also set up a loose change pot for collecting 1,2,5,20p's. At the end of each day just dump any change in the pot. We made on average £200 a year doing this, its easy and you dont even notice it as its just loose change.

Just those two simple things could net you £300-£400 a year which can go towards your overpayment :)
    5/10/12 : Mortgage Free :)
  • Thanks Jock_Tight

We already do the 1p,2p,5p pot and we now have a smash money pot that we are putting £1 and £2 coins into so when that is full will be a very nice surprise total (I hope) to go to OP

Just seen your signature you must be feeling on top of the world - well done to you

    Afternoon all

So far today has been a NSD to which has got me thinking about all our outgoings and noticed that alot of you have been using spread sheets, would anyone be kind to share? :D

I want to be able to start budgeting abit more but want to see where the money is going and feel maybe a spreadsheet will help.

Apart from that nothing much gone on, did go for a swim/steam room & jacuzzi, better point out I have a gym membership but haven't used the gym in about 4 weeks as our eldest son has been in and out of hospital and today was the first day I was able to get back there - but will be going again each week day.

Still waiting for ppl to pay for their item on ebay

well better go and get the kids dinners
