i've been charged £1200 excess for minor crash

Hi ,

We hired a car with Sixt in Northern Ireland and ,unfortunately, we were hit from behind and the cars rear bumper was damaged .

Luckily i had taken out excess insurance but what really annoys me is that i have had to pay the £1200 excess and Sixt are now saying it may take 12 weeks to settle the claim .

The Sixt rep told me the car would be repaired within a week !

Why should i be £1200 out of pocket for 12 weeks when the damage cost will be much less and Sixt already know the actual cost of the damage already

How do hire companies get away with this ?

  • They get away with it because you read and signed their terms and conditions.
  • the excess i understand but it's the 12 week wait to get a refund of the difference against the actual repair cost that i don't understand

that's 2 monthly visa bills i would need to pay interest on at least
  • I can't understand how you got burgled for the £1200 excess when you said you took out the excess waiver cover?

Because this is how long it "may" take for the other driver's insurance to accept liability and settle the claim.

Good point, I missed that. OP?
  • i took out excess waiver insurance with a separate company and need to submit a claim to them . the problem being that neither myself or them know how much exactly im claiming for until sixt give me a partial refund .

sixt in the meantime have charged me the maximum excess
  • ...... and to make things worse the guy who hit us is not being very helpful as i attempt to get his insurance details as requested by my excess insurance people .

I think he doesn't want it affecting his no claims but to be honest i've got no idea at all whether that affects me and my attempt to reclaim my excess charge

    what do you think ?
  • You were involved in an accident that has been recorded and you'll need to declare that in all future applications for insurance, regardless of who was at fault. If you don't and you make a claim, your then insurer could use the fact you didn't declare it as a means of getting out of paying.
  • oh great ! it just gets better by the minute !! lol

So you will want to sue the other party for those costs over the next 5 years.
