Preparing for winter IV

Bossymoo, that is what my kids do - take shoes in a carrier bag, then leave the wellies in the carrier on their peg. Once or twice ds has forgotten his bag of shoes, but he just puts on his plimsolls from his pe kit. The only thing is that wellies are pretty chilly on the old feet, we only have a 5 min walk but I'd want to consider welly socks/fleece lined boots if they were walking further - @ldi had some great ones a while ago in pink or red.0

Good point! We have snow boots but I need to check the sizes. We definitely have welly socks though...Bossymoo

Had to defrost the car this morning, took ages and had 2 cold kiddies - going to have to find the microwave toys from last year - pop them in the microwave before we leave and the kids cuddle them in the car to keep warm, I even have an extra one to put on the dashboard as it helps defrost the windscreen too.Living the simple life0

Tink04 what a brilliant idea re the microwave toys, I'm going to pass this on to both dds as they both use cars first thing and have small children.
I must stock up on cold and cough stuff, and buy myself some thinner gloves for driving, my thermal ones are too thick, otherwise I'm about ready, oh and I must get some more household candles as well.

Can make your own microwave rice bags - just rice filled material pouches. I use them all the time as heat pads for my knees. It won't be a cuddly toy but is a pretty decent money saving tip.0

That is a fab idea! MIL has got my kiddies some microwaveable teds for Xmas so I'll try to remember they can be used in the car too!
A few years ago we were at my inlaws, and the snow started coming down thick and fast. The kiddies were both v small, I had no pjs for them, no nappies, and none of DDs medicine. I now keep a small bag in the boot with spare clothes and other essentials. I also keep a copy of emergency telephone numbers, a bit of change and a ten pound note. Plus a torch and batteries. Will probably never need them (fingers crossed) but it's peace of mind for me if I get stuck anywhere with the little ones.Bossymoo

Hi all, finally put our heating on downstairs, hubby had to fiddle with the boiler as the pump had stopped spinning as it hadn't been on since March/April. Have put radiator reflective foil on the wall behind the lounge radiator, seems to be doing the trick!Grocery Challenge 2024

day 3 and another long night, cough/cold/sinus lurgy. I went into my various shtf meds last night, looking for congestion relief and to my horror, so many are out of date so a massive sort out and chucking down the loo, coming up today. I will only buy a couple of replacements, particularly the sinus congestion tabs for me to take at night. So what do I have in my armoury today? neti pot and salt, ibrufen and a benylin cough med. I am hoping to get by on the first two today and some menthol in a facial steamer. It hit so fast, one morning fine and by afternoon, the throat. That is a big gap in my winter preps as we cannot leave the village if we get heavy snow0

Hope you feel better soon Kittie. This is the thing about prepping, you do it once, don't use it & think it's ok but things like meds, store cupboard items need to be checked for dates & replaced if necessary. I went through the med box a few months ago & got rid of out of date items (best not to flush them down the loo, either in normal rubbish of return them to your local pharmacy & they can dispose of them safely) only need enough fancy meds for hubby as I'm pregnant all I can take is paracetamol & I pop a box in the weekly shop every now & again.
Feeling much colder here this morning, will behind all day but plan avoiding putting the heating on until later. Think I'll add my fleeces to my curtains in the lounge. They've been replaced since last winter & as they were expensive I don't fancy pinning the fleece to them so will try adding ribbon tabs to the fleece & tying it to the curtain pole & seeing how that works.
Need to get some cash out of the bank to put some change in the car & I always feel safer having some cash in the house to use. What would we do if all card machines & cash points went down? That's another job for today!0 -
You too KITTIE? it seems to have made it's way south and west in the last week I know lots of snuffly coughing villagers including me. Hope you and everyone else can shake the dratted virus off very quickly. I had some of my elderberry cordial in hot water yesterday and it really did make me feel better, be well, Lyn xxx.0
