I just watched an excellent energy prog on channel 3, excellent but very scary in that bp rises and people are in danger of heart attacks and strokes if they get too cold, although they may feel very well as hypothermia sets in. Recommended temperatures are 18 in the bedroom and 21 in the lounge, now I assume that healthy younger people can get away with less but certainly not the elderly, poorly and babies.

My recommendation is to sort out a room that can be the one room to keep warm if there is one of those terrible cold spells. Body heat will add up so even a tent in a room. I almost cried watching that programme and some people at their wits end

Just bought a big bag of spuds from Morries and Son for £2.00 so that is going to provide loads of lovely jacket spuds and comforting mash when the weather gets bad! It's going to be safely stashed away somewhere cool and dark.

I've also just changed energy suppliers and that should save me £110+ if we use the same amount as last year, but looking at the forecasts, even if we use more at least it will be at the lowest possible price!

I'm putting the big heavy curtains up tonight to keep the draughts at bay and when I change the beds I'm going to put the electric underblanket on as well, so I'm looking forward to feeling snug and cosy and PREPARED when it finally hits us.

    Hi
Can you tell me how big the bag is for £2? We can get what I'd call a farm sack around here for about £6/£7.
I just wondered if it's worth going to Mori**ons for a bag.

    Thank you

Can I just remind people that a car emergency kit isn't just for times of really bad weather. Twice this week I have been stuck in traffic for hours due to traffic accidents, and lots of road works around here. Roads are just closed off without any warning and suddenly you can be caught without a drink, food (at least something to keep you going) fuel and a fully charged phone. I know we all tend to think of heavy snow etc being a problem I'd just like to give a reminder that being held captive in the car for any amount of time needs some preparation too.' Let's be careful out there!' ;)

Oh dear, that's a bit of a worry as our bedroom sits at about 12 degrees and fell to 9 degrees overnight. We are not elderly, young or infirm so I guess we should be ok, although rolling over in the night did wake me up as the pillow was freezing! lol

My DH sometimes has to pop out and make deliveries so going to get him a winter pack to put in his rucksack just in case.

I've got home tonight to find the thermostat reading 15C and it's calling for heat but the boiler isn't kicking in :( Doesn't work for hot water either, although the boiler was slightly warm, and the tank/airing cupboard are warm so I think at least the water heated)

So a lot of hot water bottles tonight to keep me warm in bed, and an early phonecall to the heating engineer in the hope someone can come out and have a look at it before the weekend rather than after!

Hope you manage to get it sorted greenbee.

This week we have recharged all the batteries and checked out the camping lights and torches. The boys have wind-up torches that are kept in their rooms. I did have a torch in the drawer next to my bed but it seems to have walked! I think DS may have borrowed it when he went to a festival in the summer. I'll need to buy a new one if I can't locate it.

Youngest DS, despite saying he will never wear a onesie, asked if he could have one. All his friends have them and I think he feels like the odd-one-out at sleepovers. I ordered one for him and it was delivered tonight. He put it straight on and he loves it! Think I might have trouble getting him out of bed in the morning.

    Stay warm

Good morning, been reading this thread for a while now and getting great tips for winter but can someone point me in the direction of the wind up torch that people are getting from Amazon, there are lots to choose from and wondered which was the best one, thanks

I had the big stone pig filled with boiling water in to heat the bed, plus another HWB to cuddle. Had to close the curtains too, a thing I never do. Is much nicer today and back up to 11C.
