It shouldn't make the room freezing if its working properly. Are you sure its still "sucking". I had one that stopped "sucking". It was making all the right noises, but no water was going into the bottle.

I also have the meaco dessicant dehumidifier and it definitely works as a heater, I got it last year and even on days where there was only a bit of condensation on the windows I couldnt believe how much it extracted

Mine is a very basic one with no humidity setting, and it emits a cold breeze. It is very effective, but definitely not warming.

I woke up this morning and cba doing anything more than making chicken casserole in the slow cooker. I'm typing from my bed right now - a rare luxury.

It was blooming cold in here today. I live on my own in a 1950s flat that isn't well insulated, although it would heat up quickly with the heating on it gave me a chance to think over the 'What would happen ifs...'. Family don't live that close, my neighbours are of the elderly, 'go-on-lockdown after 4 o'clock' variety and there are no shops handy, although the train station is. I think I'm fairly sorted, or will be once the internet shop arrives and I finish my programme of restocking/rotating the freezer and store cupboard. What I really need is:

    * A few things that would make a meal in the event of a power cut.
    * My rooms 'dressed' for winter - thicker curtains washed and hanging, more candles.
    * A thermal mug or flask (I make a note to self to buy one for commuting fairly regularly, always forgetting but it would come in handy in cold/flu season when maybe there's a real reason I cba). Any recommendations?
    * To think of strategy should I have more than one person staying overnight when the weather is bad - extra tootbrushes, fleecy blanket etc.

Hopefully will be back on course with prepping tomorrow.

On the travel mug/flask thing, most travel mugs are not water tight so will spill if knocked over. An American friend recommend Contigo travel mugs which are built to remain sealed - you have to push a button to drink. However, they aren't cheap - I saw some in John Lewis on the weekend for £30. Amazon has them listed from £22. I paid $35 for a pack of two on Amazon.com a couple of years ago. Excellent product but I have managed to break one. This time last year, Costco sold a similar travel mug in a twin-pack for £14. It has the same seal. (I bought several as backups and gave others Christmas presents.) For the life of me, I can't remember the brand name.

Note: these mugs are great for tea and coffee but I wouldn't use them for soup - they aren't designed for thick liquids. Also, you have to make sure the mechanism is flushed out, if you drink something more sticky like a capaccino or hot chocolate.

I got the rose trees/bushes cut right down the other day and mowed the back law as well (front didn't get cut as it has not grown as quick as the back for some reason). I bought some bark chips today and spent an hour putting those down in the front borders. They do a good job keeping the weeds at bay. Only trouble is the Blackbirds seem to enjoy having a good scratch around in the bark once I have done it.

I wonder what this winter will bring! Hopefully, it won't be as bad and as cold as 2009/2010 was.

well it got down to freezing last night and when i got up the rooftops all around were covered in thick frost

still didn't put on the heat though even though i knew it was going to be that cold (gotta plan ahead with storage heaters) it was 15.5C in the lounge when i got up but withint 30 min of having the computer on that was up by 2 degrees, i put on my nice warm (often TOO warm) new slipper boots, brushed cotton pjs and my fleece dressing gown (oh the joys of working from home!) and a nice fleece over my lap and i never felt that cold, before i knew it it was about 18.5C and i was nice and toasty

last night before bed i decided to try something, i laid my new microfleece blanket over me and then drew my summer weight duvet over the top. i also brought my wheat bag which was lukewarm in with me and snuggled it up against my chest.

i melted into the bed it was heavenly but eventually i realised i couldn't quite fall asleep because i was TOO WARM :rotfl:
despite it only being a summer weight duvet that fleece made a huge difference next to my skin (and ohhhh so silky soft) and that tiny bit of heat left in my wheat bag warming my core ohhh bliss

i'm almost looking forward to winter now :p
