Preparing for winter IV

Weather's really odd here just now - cold in the mornings & now (about to go & hunt for a fleece!) but although it feels cool during the day it's still really humid!
Took the dog for a really long walk mid morning & it was def chilly so had my (thin) fleece & bodywarmer on - but I was soaked in sweat by the time I got back to the car (but hadn't been hot while walking)
What's that all about?
Humidity in the spare room has been better this year (was terrible last summer which I think was all the damp weather) but need to think about the winter as I dry all my washing in there mmmmm
Still need to get the gutters cleaned & try to get another coat on the new cat kennel if I can get a decent day to do it
Clothing about sorted I think & pet food looking a lot better now as I got a 10kg + 2kg free enormous bag of dry cat food & their wet has been on offer so have stocked up on that too. Just cat litter to get now!Grocery Challenge £211/£455 (01/01-31/03)

Yesterday we used the log burner for the first time after the summer. The cones we have collected and dried over the summer were excellent to start the fire with. Thanks to those who have mentioned it on this thread.
Earlier this week I noticed a draught coming from underneath the zink area. When I looked I noticed that there was a gap underneath the zink and where the kitchen cupboards are. A day or so later I thought to myself I wonder if I can fill the gap with a pillow and that's what I have now done filled it with 2 old pillows and hardly any draught is coming through now.No toiletries challenge, started 18/1/2010 - Putting £1 in my savings jar for every item that I use up. I have sorted out my clothes into two summer and winter wardrobes.
I cleaned my winter boots today and put in new insoles and put my sandals away. I also hunted out my snow trax.
I am waiting until payday in October to buy a few new fleecy throws and some faux fur ones maybe. I have a hard time finding a faux fur throw that can be machine washed as the ones I was looking at had to be handwashed.:undecided
I want to get a satiny throw to go on our bed that is lightweight and easy to clean and dry but will offer a layer of warmth.
I did buy some new curtains this summer but they seem so thin that I might have to buy a winter pair too.:o
I'm about to go and look for all my winter hats and gloves to keep in the wardrobe in a bag. I keep my gloves with my socks and it's annoying having to search for black gloves amongst my black socks as they look the same in the dark.:p0 -
Have just got back from a wedding, hotel very warm (6th floor lol) but waiting for bus at station I could feel the wind cutting cold through my jeans!
Home and outside windowsill thermometer says 12C and indoor one in my bedroom says 18-19C.... Have put on my slipper boots and my new thick cardigan, TU from BHF CS £3.25

DD (7) is snuggled on the sofa with last years fleece onesie and the year before's thick fleece dressing gown! It isn't even cold in here but she obviously appreciates being very cosy!
I buy things oversized for the children so they last. They won't need new ones this year and if I can lose a stone, I won't need any either. I did get a new dressing gown from a clearance sale. It was reduced from £15 to £3 and although it is thin fleece, it is good quality and very warm.
Slippers were a bargain from Primarni but the dog has fallen in love with them and steals them any time he gets the chance so I fear another pair will be needed before the winter is out. Glad they are cheap!
Must get curtain pole for living room so I can get curtains back up there. They fell down over a year ago and if I don't get them up soon, this will be the second winter with none at that window.
I'd like a small rug for the kitchen (tiny room) which does get chilly and I should make a blind for the bathroom.
However, yak trax, hats and scarves and winter boots etc are ready and all the preps I have done over the years from the tips on this thread will benefit us for yet another year0 -
Sunny here today but chilly!
Went to aldi this morning and got the outside tap cover and window insulation kit. Not sure how they'll work out but worth a try.
We moved into our house in July and only have vertical blind at the downstairs windows and are after some curtains. We have a large bay window at the front and finding it a nightmare to find curtains to fit it. Am thinking we either need to pay out for made to measures or get two sets to fit :undecided
Think I'm going to put our flannelette sheets on tomorrow as it is getting colder and they're so lush to get into
Trying to live a good life on little money :T0 -
flannelette sheets arrived today.. just as well as I needed to change the bedding after the baby sicked on them (and me!!) in the middle of the night.
Doing lots of flinging and tidying and laundry today.. so sick of the mess!!
Duvets got for the 2 littlies (2 and 3) so they will be snuggly I hope.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0 -

morning, I am looking to line my curtains with the fleece blankets/throws.
How do you do it? Without sounding too dim, my curtains are 66x90" but the actual window is 44x66". No radiator under the window. All the fleeces I've seen are 48x60"
I'm going to put them so the gap is at the top of the curtains. So it hangs level or just below the sill. Would it be better to put them in the middle of the curtain for the width or of-set nearer to the edge so they would meet when closed. I hope this makes sense.
Thanks for any advice x0 -
I'd sew 2 fleeces together along the 60" side so they were 60"x 90" and just tack them to the curtains... or staple them depending on the fabric the curtains are made of... that way they are also easy to remove next summer.
If you just want to use 1 fleece, I'd fix it to the header tape at the top and central to the window not the curtain, so there would be no fleece gap in the middle.LB moment 10/06 Debt Free date 6/6/14Hope to be debt free until the day I dieMortgage-free Wannabee (05/08/30)6/6/14 £72,454.65 (5.65% int.)08/12/2023 £33602.00 (4.81% int.)0
