Yesterday we were given loads of various pieces of wood. Will spend some time this Summer to cut it ready to be used in the autumn. We are making paper logs as well.
Good luck to you all with your preparation. No toiletries challenge, started 18/1/2010 - Putting £1 in my savings jar for every item that I use up. Pot 1 to 4 = £261. Pot 5=£23

I recently managed to get my rotten (literally) wooden front and back doors replaced with new pvc double glazed doors! Blooming expensive but there is already noticably less noise and no draughts at all, so hopefully they will earn their worth over the next few years with cheaper bills! The areas near to the doors also seem a lot bigger now! Maybe it's the bright white doors themselves or more likely the lack of door curtains and sausage dog draught excluders everywhere that has made the difference! Either way, I am keeping the curtains and s-dogs just in case I need to use them in the winter!
Keep prepping Peeps,
Alice

Thinking about winter to come and the winter gone by. Thinking about what we can do to improve on preps last year and things we needed that we didn't have.
Luckily this winter (as part of last winter) we are in a new build which, because it keeps its heat and a very small house, we saw a decrease in fuel bills. I've kept the DD up and trying to get a buffer, more so not to incur debt.
Thinking about candle stocks as well as matches and will invest in the coming months.
I also would like a torch/torches each (wind up?) and a battery powered light for the landing.
Need to wrack your brains. In this house there is a vent in the downstairs toilet leading out the wall. That toilet is freezing, so much so it's a cloack/boot room! I'd like to cover it to lessen the chill. As you can feel it from under the door but frightened re: safety issue. Am I ok taping bubble wrap over it?0 -
how about a bit of scrap fabric wont seal it but will cut the draught. and maybe same at bottom of door thickish. kind. or double it so ot just sweeps along the floor if that makes sense
(i m still using myphone to keep up with you all not easy everything. I can do to save. is going in my laptop fund so the more I can do to save the better ) hope it helps2nd purse challenge no040£0 Sealed pot challenge ???? £2 trolley find not counting small coins till end year0 -
Just had a blood test at Drs come back saying I'm vitamin D deficient! I'm on over counter pills so that should help, but I am really surprised as I don't think of myself as an indoor hermit.
I want to rope DH into making some wooden shutters for the insides of the windows before next winter. I used sheets of cardboard last time and it made a massive difference, but looked a bit like a squat!0 -
Hi FUDDLE have just asked He Who Knows about vent covers and he has been online to look. If you put in a search on Vents at Tool Station or Screwfix, they both do a vent cover called an adjustable vent that is closeable, some fit on the inside and some fit on the outside and they were under a fiver. He thinks they will fix on to the wall with something sticky like No Nails and would give you the option to have the cover partly open in the warmer weather, hope that helps, Cheers Lyn xxx.0

B&Q have the vents in too.0

Hi all, I decided to not bother prepping for Summer, there doesnt seem much need considering we've had like 2 niceish days this year so far !
What I am going to do though is get all my decorating done in the Summer months so I am not painting this winter, as I always seem to make this mistake then am stuck with fumes and paint taking an age to dry!
How are everyones gardens doing?
I may have mentioned it earlier, but I had a poor daffodil show and no tulips. I've just had 3 poppies pop up and a few pansies that were well hidden, but on the whole a poor Spring show.
Also potatoes .. every one seems to be bad lately. I am chucking away more than I am using. I am thinking I'll just start buying frozen roasties.
I've worked my money out for the year and found places where I can put extra £50's here and there on the gas and electric to use over Winter.
x1,2 & 5p: Christmas day food £9.31
10 & 20p: misc savings £2.70
50p: Christmas presents £3.50
£2: holidays £2.000 -
I have a pre-payment gas meter and am thinking that even though I don't use much (often only about £8 per month overall), I will put an extra £15 per month on between now and Christmas. That will help the winter payments, especially if I have house guests at all (the only time I really think about putting the heating on, rather than just another layer of clothing).
I still need to get my chimney swept and order some coal and logs for delivery during the school summer hloidays.
In the evenings at the moment, I am knitting an aran jumper for me and a couple of scarves for friends. The scarves are really straight forward, a 40cm circular needle, 4mm thick, 85 stitches round and then knit (just garter stitch as it comes out like stocking stitch) round the tube as long as needed! Lovely and thick, even though I only use dk yarn, as it is in effect a double layer. I also knit a row of holes at the start and the end, to put tassles through.
I did one for myself 2 years ago and people were so impressed that I quickly had orders for loads in various football or rugby team colours and they have kept me busy (and my hands warm) ever since!
I also really need to do a proper stock take on my freezer! Then decide which meals I need to double up on next time I cook them, so that I can re-stock gradually!
Take care Fellow Preppers, summer may still be around the corner but I am not holding my breath waiting,
Alice
