who refuses to use their smartphone for banking?

  • To be honest using a smartphone for banking (As long as you have your phone is pass code protected) is probably much safer than using a PC for online banking. Far less likely to have a Virus or keylogger like a PC. I refuse to use PC for online banking. I will only use one of my Macs or my iPhone 5.
  • At home the smartphone app is a poor fourth option that I never use. Mobile banking apps really come into their own when you're abroad though. I use mine to manage sending money from my account to my credit card while abroad to reduce my credit card interest while making cash advances.

Much safer to use your phone (providing decent security software is installed) than to be using insecure public computers in hotels.

  • I recently moved to Santander's 123 Current account, to earn a bit more on banking and credit balances.

Unfortunately they use a One Time Pass Code system via mobile phone to enable online payments, for example, and where we live there is no mobile signal. By the time I have jumped in the car to drive around and get the OTPC and get back to the computer, the session will have timed out and the OTPC is useless.

I have written to their CEO and they have confirmed that they have no intention of offering a card reader system as an alternative.

I wish Santander had made this clearer when I opened the account, and I now have to consider going elsewhere. Traipsing down to one of their branches, or spending time and money on their telephone banking is not attractive.

The mobile signal problem is much more extensive than the phone companies would have you believe (surprise, surprise). You can check on the reality of phone coverage at the opensignal website

Surely, as your complain is with the mobile network, you should be seeking out a reliable provider and a working phone, rather than enduring bad service? It's not just Santander, many other forms use mobiles as second-stage authentication, and this measure is to be applauded.

No, have a look at opensignalmaps (try google) and you will see that coverage across north Oxfordshire, like most other rural ares is very poor to non-existent. Do not trust the coverage maps provided by the mobile phone companies. Our provider (Tesco, via O2) admits that the service around our address is very weak. The other providers are no better.

The solutions open to us are to go back to Cooperative Bank, who use card readers but pay no interest on credit balances, or find another bank with card reader AND interest. Or move house!

is anybody not using their smart phones for banking?

or you want to use the high street banks ?
    I don't even have a smart phone.
All I need these days is a basic phone in case of emergency. I don't need it to take photos, browse the web, do handstands or make the coffee. :)

    It's because you are weird.
  • Both Marley and I have smartphones but choose not to use them for banking. It's personal preference.
