OS Daily Thread Thursday 27th Sept

o/s daily thread 27th sept OS Daily Thread for Thursday 27th September This is the Daily thread for Thursday 27th September 2012. This is an “over the garden fence” type thread where we chat about everything Old Style and maybe a little bit more. It’s a great, inspiring and motivating thread we start each day to discuss what Old Style things we’re going to do today or what we’ve achieved already. Everyone’s welcome, please do come in, put your feet up (although check the fence hasn’t just been painted first!) and join us for an Old Style natter. The more the merrier!

As this is the Old Style Board, it would be appreciated if posts could include some Old Style content. Please be aware that many people may have small screens, or slow internet connections, so please don’t post large pictures, or clip art – links are preferred.

When you make a post, if you feel like giving it a title, that will help others that don’t have the time to read everything skim through the thread quickly but if not it's not a problem. Please do not start a new daily thread before you go to bed at night because this often leaves things confusing with two daily threads live at the same time. The idea is that a member would start each new daily thread after they get up in the morning.

Some people who chat here like to try to answer everyone. Don’t feel you have to though, a general “hi everyone, hope everyone’s well” type start does just as well.

Very early good morning to everyone :) I've had a rough couple of days and stayed mainly off the forum. My incision is still leaking pus and yuk, but I'm seeing the neurosurgeon this morning to get the go-ahead to return to work next week. I've barely eaten for 3 days because of a horribly dodgy stomach and OS stuff hasn't really been happening. I've been moping and staring at the walls - heck I've even bored myself. There are only so many books you can read and films you can watch. I'm missing my work routine.

I'm quite proud of a decision we reached yesterday. We have a friend from years ago who contacted us to ask if she could have an item we no longer wanted. We said Yes of course, but it turned out it would've cost us a lot of money to deliver it and feed ourselves for the day it would take to do the driving. She's going to arrange for a courier to collect the item instead, which is fine by me. Problem solved.

Anyway, on the positive side, DH was lovely to me last night when he came home and I snivelled all over him. Don't think he'd realised how much I've been struggling, and I'm not very good at asking for help because I feel I should be able to do it all. He went shopping and cooked dinner - lamb shank + mash.

When I'm back from the neurosurgeon, I'm going to Lidl as the cupboards are bare, and we're off to Costco tonight. I did some price comparisons from last month's receipts and MySupermarket, and just 2 months of catfood from Costco means it pays for the year's membership fees. Felix is 42p/tin as opposed to 50-56p/tin in the big supermarkets, and we get through roughly 200 tins a month, so Costco saves us at least £18/month. I've set up a spreadsheet with our usual items to work out where is best to buy our stuff. Should be on for a pretty frugal month because the freezers are still stuffed with meat, and I'm aiming to come in under budget so that next month I can pay off the remains of a bill completely and close the account. Looking forward to crossing one off the list and move on to the next - aiming to pay off a second one by Christmas.

Once I'm back at work next week, I'll be taking sandwiches if I can figure out interesting ones that I like. If I bake a medium loaf twice a week, that should do me - I react badly to shop-bought bread, and I can intersperse with extra portions of saved dinner like shepherds pie and curry. Until I was off sick I was spending at least £6/day on breakfast and lunch, and the thought of it makes me shudder now at all the waste.

Favourite girl-cat is in disgrace because she smashed a fossil on the mantelpiece - oh well. Tens of thousands of years old, and all it takes is one feline flounder :)

Have a good day, everyone :) I'm off to do some laundry and wash-up as the kitchen has reached crisis point.

  • Morning Tiglath & all who cross/follow
Tiglath, I hope you feel better soon.
WM is on, fish fed, packups ready, hubby has a cuppa in bed & I'll take him up another one just before I leave, he worked a 12 & a half hour day yesterday & is worn out.
I need to have a discussion with my line manager today, my 2 hours a day help was taken away at the end of last term & has been replaced with a very reluctant & grumpy person who fit's a few minutes in when she can, unfortunately she is now picking through the work she is supposed to be doing for me & delaying work for people she doesn't like, as the list of people she doesn't like is long & extensive she is making life difficult! I know I work in a school, but I expect the childish behaviour from the students, not the staff!
Hey ho, it all adds to life's great tapestry!.
    Have a good day everyone.
    Hugs Hester

Oh Tiglath, hope you feel better soon.

I am thoroughly fed up again. Water is once more pouring out of the side of the house. OH decided to just leave it as if he'd gone up in the loft to sort it he would have missed his train. I know his job is hard and stressful but I am struggling to see what terrible thing would happen if he got a sligtly later train ONCE. I can't get into the loft as I am a shorty and we don't have a proper loft ladder, just a step ladder.

It's open evening tonight so I will be at work until 9pm. Somehow I need to find the time to get a plumber round. I should be able to come home for an hour in the afternoon hopefully as I am technically only meant to be working until 1.20 today.

Worst thing is, we're on a water metre. And when I say pouring I mean POURING - like a tap on full, turning my patio into a pond. Really hope I can find a plumber who can come round this afternoon. Really don't need this!

On the plus side, dinner will be cottage pie that I assembled on Tuesday, just needs to go in the oven. I might have mine early if I can manage to get home in the afternoon, as I'm not sure I'd last until 10pm.

Ho hum. Hope everyone has a good day!
  • Morning

    Morning everyone

Hugs to those that need/want them that are having a hard/sad time at the moment x

Sis's op was cancelled at last minute, after they'd got up at the crack of dawn, driven to the hospital and were sat in the waiting room, they didn't even have the decency to take her and BIL to a private room to tell them, hospital worker just came in to waiting room and said that her op was cancelled - needless to say she's devastated as now she has to go back on to all the drugs (was taken off them all in readiness for yesterday's op), and then come off them again in readiness for next time, looking like 10th October - we'll see!

Light cloud, with sun trying to peek through here this morning. DH up and off to work stupid early.

Dinner last night was chicken with a mushroom sauce, mash, carrots, green beans, peas and LO cauli/brocc cheese and yorkshires - lovely it was too! Not sure about tonight though, will have to think about that.

Have the normal round of chores to do and need to get on time of it all as busy weekend ahead.

Have a good day, stay safe and well x

    Morning everyone,

Tiglath Hope that you feel better soon.

Hester I often find that the staff are worse than the pupils!

Daisyegg We have a school open evening tonight as well, it must be the season for them.

Our German visitor left yesterday morning so it is back to the normal chaos in the moorhen nest.
I have an open evening at school tonight so I will be at work till late so I need to get this evenings food sorted for everyone before I go-it never seems to be anyone else's job, I wonder what would happen if I didn't do it?

Have a lovely day everyone and hope that the rain has stopped for now.:)

Quick one from me as we overslept :o

Daisiegg, we had exactly the same problem at our old house, you need to get the plumber in asap, jiggling about with it will only temporarily stop the problem, it needs fixing permanantly. If I were you I would leave one tap on a trickle all day, I know its a waste, but its better than the potential damp problem to your house which could cost £££££

    Will update properly later xx
  • Morning everyone :D

Been busy and stressful week, am half way through decorating DS's birthday cake for the weekend.

It looks as though H has got the job in Bath :eek::eek:
They have rejected all other candidates and want to pursue things with him. He's going down again on Tuesday for a meet and greet and assuming he's happy with everything he will have a formal job offer (I am guessing)
I feel I am a headless chicken though no knowing where to start first :o

Anyway I've got friends coming over this morn for coffee. I was baking chocolate brownies late last night as I realised I had nothing to offer them :o and rest of today will be cake decorating. Tea will be soup as H and I are doing the 5:2 fast today.

Tiglath sorry you're not feeling too good xxxx I did :rotfl: at the feline flouncer :)

Hester I wish you joy on your quest for grown up behaviour ;)

Miffy fingers crossed for DD xx

Sorry I've forgotten everything else :o

Hugs and spoons all round xxxx

daisiegg turn off the water at the stop tap before you leave the house, if no one is in an d you do not leave the washer on, you do not need it on.
