even with no mot your insurance is STILL VALID..

very unlikely to get stopped probaby wont even be on anpr yet.. i hardly seen any anpr traffic cars onthe motorways its normally the traffic wannabe wombles

Thing is he drove straight through an anpr site, and the M6 is policed there.

Probably no chance at all of being seen in the normal queues on the M6.

....When I went to renew my tax (expired December) on the 12th of Jan it failed the online MOT check.

When I found the certificate I discovered it ran out last August so I’ve been driving MOT less for almost six months. During that time I must have covered the thick end of 10,000 miles including multiple trips into central London, up and down the M1 & M4 and over the Channel twice without hearing a peep from any of the ANPR units I must have passed.

Maybe no MOT by itself is too small a crime to bother with, maybe the MOT database isn’t linked to ANPR or maybe I was just lucky....

Are yet guessing or do you know that for a fact?

I missed one of mine by about 4 months once, and I was all over the country then as well, so I guess they don't pick it up.

I've seen several suggestions today that anpr doesn't pick up the MOT and I've read a few posts similar to those above from people who have unwittingly driven for months without being stopped. Not something I'd perhaps like to test though, and I think I can vouch for OH not being keen on it either after a tense trip home.

His journey from Coventry to south stoke takes him onto the M6 toll after te pay booths and through Lichfield so he avoids most of the traffic and the anpr cameras anyway. He's got the journey down to a fine art now, 12 months on that commute isn't pleasant.

AFAIK traffic coppers don't often have the alert set on ANPR for no MOT. They look for tax disc evaders and the uninsured. They often end up with doing such drivers for no MOT as well.

Perhaps no MOT, being non-endorsable, isn't a big enough collar for them?

However, a lot of coppers do seem to believe the old chestnut about insurance being invalidated by no MOT. As has been said above, this isn't the case as the third party cover required to meet the RTA is still operative.

I have heard of cases where fully comp drivers who had an accident with no MOT in force didn't get their damage claims settled and in one case a write-off was only compensated by the salvage value of the vehicle. I can't speculate on the veracity of these stories. They were however on the Pepipoo fightback forum, so I had no reason to doubt them.

  • As a previous poster, I drove for about 4-5 months without an MOT as (stupidly) I thought that the MOT and Tax were in sync on the car.

I got stopped 3 times during that period. Once when they thought I was using a phone. (I wasn't, just scratching my ear...a look through the phone records and I was on my way), once because there had been an accident and they were trying to get witnesses and once because the car stank and they wanted to check my fuel records (was running on veg oil).

The final time the computer did register no-MOT and I got a £40 fine and was sent on my way. car was MOT'd the next day and passed without issue.

They are really more concerned if you drive a car which is not roadworthy and that will definitely nullify the insurance. A valid MOT is no guarantee of that either way so won't effect the insurance. If the car is in good condition, don't sweat it and use it till you get the MOT done.

Bit late after the event, but. If he booked it in for a pre-booked MOT, he's entitled to drive it directly there immaterial of distance so long as it's roadworthy.

So the easy solution would be to book it in for MOT near home, and if pulled, tell them he's dropping it at the garage then getting you to pick him up from there.

Just make sure you've prepped the garage with that version of events.
Yes it's overwhelming, but what else can we do?
