OH's car is booked in for its MOT on Friday with our usual mechanic. He had it in his head that it ran out on Monday.
As it transpires, the MOT ran out yesterday....
At present he is in Coventry at work and is now wondering whether to chance driving the car back to Stoke and borrow my car for work tomorrow or, to try and get it MOT'd now with Halfords.
Whats the penalty these days for no MOT? Is it just a fine?
(and please please don't tell me the old chestnut about the insurance being invalid
)

You're permitted to use a vehicle without a current MOT (or current tax disc) on the public road only if you are driving directly to or from a pre-arranged MOT appointment.
Valid insurance cover is still required.

It's my understanding it would be a fine if he got caught, but with a good attitude and an explination whilst eating some humble pie might even get him out of that.
I'd say he'd have to be REALLY unlucky even to get stopped.0 -

That was the way I was leaning to be honest. Its a reasonably new car to him and its first MOT. Unbelievably he's got the dates of all our cars for MOT's on his phone, but his is a few days out. He's kicking himself because it's not something he's done before.
Problem is with him working in Coventry is the M6 commute home and the traffic cops... My line of thinking was take the back roads home tonight, use my car tomorrow and then drive to the MOT on Friday as planned.0 -
Yep. Fine only for no MOT.
Why not just get it MOT'd where he is? Is it a shed that will only pass if a "mate" does it?0 -
even with no mot your insurance is STILL VALID..
very unlikely to get stopped probaby wont even be on anpr yet.. i hardly seen any anpr traffic cars onthe motorways its normally the traffic wannabe womblesSealed pot challenger # 10

No, its a reasonably new 08 plate Astra 1.9 CDTi, not expecting any shocks at all with it, just a bit nervous with Halfords or Kwik Fit really, not people we'd choose to use normally.even with no mot your insurance is STILL VALID..

I've done some googling and was amazed at how many threads out there come out with "Your insurance is void!!" including one that was supposedly offering genuine legal motoring advice
You know what it's like though, as soon as there is something amiss traffic police appear literally everywhere0 -
If it were me I would risk it. The penalty is a fine and no points.0

But is it not also potential confiscation of the car i.e. if stopped and PC Plod is that way inclined he can prohibit you from continuing your journey
Maximum possible fine is £1000, as shown on this table http://www.direct.gov.uk/en/TravelAndTransport/Highwaycode/DG_069870 But note you can be fined the same for careless cycling, and £500 for riding on the pavement - it simply doesn't happen in real life.
As long as the driver can show he's genuinely made a small error, the car is booked in for Friday, and it is not in a dangerous condition, he's have to fail an attitude test to get any sort of problem. And even then it would be most likely a fixed penalty ticket @ £60. https://www.askthe.police.uk/content/Q203.htm0 -
He's gone for the 'risk it' scenario. If he is stopped he can be exceptionally nice and hopefully as he is taking the car home to garage they will be reasonable. He's just left work so should be home by 8.
Tomorrow he has his usual motorway commute in my little 13 year old 1.4 Clio.....
(I'm trying very hard not to laugh when I think of the moment he discovers lack of 6th gear and cruise control lmao)0
