Are you saying he's in social housing? Because if so, it is worth finding out if moving in would bump him up to a higher priority for a bigger place due to overcrowding.
If you are both private tenants, your LHA will increase and cover the cost of a larger property - the Direct Gov website will give you an idea of how many bedrooms you would qualify for and the LHA rate.0
