What Benefits Could I Get?

My partner is disabled and is now at the stage he needs care for safety's sake.

We don't live together, so it would require me to give up work to do this.

I have one son on JSA and another doing an apprenticeship so he only earns around £90 per week.

If I were to give up work and claim Carers Allowance, are there any other benefits I can get as I cannot pay my rent/bills on an income of £58 a week. I'd be giving up a min wage job to care, so it's quite a drop in income.

I rent privately and don't get any Tax Credits etc due to the children having finished education and they have their own income.

I've been told that I will get LHA and CTB but the LHA wont cover the rent and I will have to find a shortfall of around £30 a week

So I was wondering if I can get anything else as Carers Allowance is less than JSA and IS.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks :D

you would get an income support top up. which yould take your weekly anount to about $100. you would also get some housing and council tax benefit, but your sons would be expected to pay some ( non dependant deduction)

You don't mention what benefits he is on as that will obviously make a difference.(Is he getting ESA and if so is it contribution or income based? If contribution based then it will continue unchanged but if income based then any income and savings you have will be taken into account.) Just realised that although you call him your partner you don't live together or plan to so that isn't the situation. :o

You will only be elegible for carer's allowance if he is in receipt of middle or higher care rate DLA.

also ... if your partner currently receives the severe disability premium ( lf he is on means tested IS/ESA and gets DLA at middle or higher rate)
and he lives alone ... if you claim Carers Allowance for looking after him. he would lose the severe disabilty premium

You can still claim carers allowance and work part time - CA is not affected as long as you don't earn more than £100 a week after certain deductions (like Income tax).

He's on DLA Higher Rate and Mobility Higher Rate and yes :D he IS my partner (fiance actually) but we cannot live together as my sons and I wont fit into his accomodation (not enough rooms - we have 4 children between us!) :rotfl:just waiting for all our kids to leave home and then see what the council offer him!

    Thanks xx

I get rent money off them, but of course they are saving for a deposit on their own place so that I can move out to a smaller place that I can afford. :D

Work wont give me part time hours unfortunately :(
  • Thanks for all the advice, I guess I'll have to do some sums before I resign from work :rotfl:

I did a quick calculation on entitled.to and it seems I'm only £12 a week better off working as I pay out so much on Train Fares each month that to do part-time hours anywhere would be a farce!

    Thanks everyone xxx
