I am currently with Virgin Media for my broadband and have been approached by BT to chance - I am being charged by VM £22.35pm BT will charge 13+pm delayed for 6 months.

BT say they can guarentee a speed of 6MB but will possibly get 8+MB

With VM I get 4 - 6 MB - on an ordinary telephone line.

Are BT taking rubbish or could this be true

Expectingly VM have responded and reduced to £18.65pm plus an addl., £30.00p for 6months effectively making it about £10.00pm for 6Months.

Would I be right to change?

Also VM say if I change I will loose my VM email address that I have had for years - is there anyway around this?

  • Are you satisfied with VM ? if you are then it's better the devil you know.
BT say they can guarantee you 6MB but is that 24/7 or is it going to drop significantly during peak times.

Yes get a email address that's not tied in with any ISP.
Inform everybody that you have a new address and do this before the VM account is closed

A few years ago I used to be with BT but the email account is still active.
I guess the way they way they look at it is each time I send a email from it it's advertising their product.

  • Go here http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange_search see what you can expect and look for LLU , if there is no LLU then BT will be the "fastest" but probably not the cheapest

BT £13/pm wont be for unlimited downloads you'll get stung for all sorts of additional charges which will soon bump the price up.

BT are unlikely to give a better speed than virgin national, until your exchange is moved to infinity, and then at a cost.

Keep haggling with Virgin, but use a cheaper isp than BT as a bargaining chip

If you have an extension, you might be able to improve your speed slightly by removing the bell wire.

In my opinion, it's not really worth the hassle and costs and worry of being tied to a severely limited 10GB package, especially if you use iplayer, and especially with BT, who are not shy when it comes to whacking extra download charges on. £5 for every upto 5GB.

The downloads and cost soon rack up. The £13 package, and all the x months free offers are there to appear cheap and pull people in.

Virgin afaik, don't bother charging extra's however much you download, even on their cheaper packages, and you have been paying too much anyway.

  • You may not download much now but in a few months time that could change.
As Closed said it's not worth moving.

So if I stayed with Virgin do you think I should haggle even though that is not on offer just the temp discounts - in a way they are just trying to keep me.
