with regard to the rest of the day Boulogne sur mer and a sea life type place called http://www.nausicaa.co.uk/?gclid=CKWah5Hw0rICFcPHtAodSzMAWQ

is an interesting place to go to. Better than some Sea Life's in this country in my opinion, and couple of hours or so to go round. Easy to find and free parking.

I agree with you there  That's the best one I've been too :) Expensive but worth it ;) Also recommend walking in the old town as well as the harbour area.

Hope the weather is good for you.

  • Personally I think you should head over the border to Belgium and Adinkerke and stock up with baccy and a Belgian lager called Jupiler, its only about 35 miles from Calais straight along the A16 motorway then on the way back to to the Auchan hypermarket at Dunkirk, again straight off the A16 you cant get lost.Cant post links cos I'm a newbie but the daytripper site above is very good.

  • Another vote for the tunnel! Quicker.

As you have already got a ferry crossing then its too late for that, maybe next time?

Ferry is ok though, quite relaxing, you can get a coffee and something to eat on the way out and one of you can have a beer or two on the return crossing.

Havnt done the trip for a few years now as we live to far away from the SE to make it worthwhile, despite having friends that way.

You are right though, Tesco and Sainsbury have closed their stores in Calais. I would imagine because there's no need for them anymore as they can equal prices in cases of beer etc in this country now. We used to swap Tesco Clubcard points for Eurotunnel crossings and go when we knew we were going to be in London and or Kent. Even then, it wasn't much cheaper but it was a nice trip and a chance to get the passport out.

I havnt helped at all there but your post brought back a few memories!
  • If you're there on a Saturday, Calais has a market in the marketplace/car park until midday. Good place to practice your old school day French when buying fruit and veg.

The Sephora in Cite Europe is a decent size if your wife likes make up and perfume. Not particularly cheaper than here for brands but their own brand stuff is good. There is a smaller branch in Auchan too.

I normally go to Auchan and Carrefour for wine as I like foreign supermarkets and buying random stuff that I can't get here. Jam is normally cheap and I prefer the squirty mayo you can buy in France.

It's the wrong time of year now but Jardiland is worth a visit for plants, I've found some unusual ones there in the past. It's between Cite Europe and Auchan.

If its a nice day head to the beach and have an ice cream as there are normally several vans. There is also a place that sells chips and mayo in the corner of the car park.

Despite Calais being a bit of a dump, I can search out money spending opportunities anywhere and it's easy to fill the day in.

I like chips from the frites van too :)

When we sail, we always grab a coffee just before we get off the ferry. I channel hop 3 or so times a year, it's easier to get to Dover docks than say Brighton :j

If you get to a Carrefour, their Sire de Beaupre sparkling white wine is surprisingly nice for £1 a bottle.
