Google for "clio fusible link" images and you will see what needs replacing.

There is a good picture on the Renault forums, google "Tried to charge flat battery with polarity incorrect" and it should bring up the post with it in.

Please help, fella was trying to change oil filter in my 2006 clio and touched the alternator with the tool. It sparked and so did the battery. Now the car is dead it will not start and even the lights will not turn on. Checked fuse all seem ok. We think the battery could be flat but we have charged it and still nothing not even a sound from the starter motor not sure if it is charging correctly. Any help would be good.
there should be another fuse box in the engine bay that houses the alternator fuse, renulte parts desk will tell you were it is when you enquire about the part

  • Thank you all so much for your help. The photo did it. Put us in the right direction. Off to buy new fuse tomorrow so hoping that will fix things. If not will be back and asking for more advice.
  • Good luck fixing, bet you wished you paid the £25 at National Tyres for oil change now, lol.
Google gives you answers use it.........

How did it start with the fuse blown? And how did it manage to get 3 miles with no power?

if battery had catastrophically failed it would have exploded
Not necessarily and fairly unlikely. They are designed with some safety in mind.

I once had a battery that failed catastrophically out of the blue - all lights came up perfectly one morning, turned the key to start and everything died, no power at all. Inspection showed that an internal cell wall had blown through.

    hi
    yes
i was talking in the context of this thread
op shorted battery out but the fail safe is the fusible link saved a very dangerous situation:)

however i have seen a battery explode so never put spanners or the like on them so there isnt a fail safe as such just a bomb this is why one has to be extra careful even with sealked for life batteries if charging them because they still do vent its just the vent is hidden from view
