Calling Isle of Man on a mobile

I know Isle of Man is a sort of Independent territory but it still has a 0044 prefix when calling from overseas, so imagine my surprise when my bill went from £26 a month to £124 this month and when i checked into out, found out that Isle of Man was charged like mainland Europe!
How can they get away with this and is it all mobile companies that do this?

Different rules apply for mobile and landline, but since +44 is no indication of the cost of the call, mobile networks charge calls to the IoM and Channel Islands (and their respective mobile and fixed networks in those territories).
They 'get away' with it only because they publish a price list of codes and the charges that apply to calling them. If it was a secret, then you have a justifiable complaint.
Sadly, this situation has existed for almost 20 years, so it is't something new - but I'll agree it catches many out who think as you did.0 -

Yes, most people calling an 07xxx number with a +44 prefix (excluding 070xx) would expect it to be a UK mobile and be charged as to UK mobiles.
The marketers of these IoM and Jersey cards refer to them as UK mobile numbers, but they are not.0 -
The IoM, Jersey, Guernsey etc. have a similar status to Gibraltar or the Falklands, despite being part of the British Isles. You're OK with the Scillies though, they're part of Cornwall.0

No.
Gibraltar's international prefix is +350 and is not part of the UK for telephone purposes.
The Falkland Islands' country code is +500 and is not part of the UK for telephone purposes.
IoM, Jersey and Guernsey have +44 as the international prefix. Most people would think they are part of the UK for telephone purposes.0 -

As stated above, Jersey, Guernsey and the Isle of Man have +44 (UK) codes, Gibraltar and the Falklands don't.0
