Nationwide FlexAccount - should I receive a cheque book?

Hi,
I recently opened a FlexAccount and was told I could have a cheque book.
On the letter I received, it says thank you for applying for a FlexAccount. We are pleased to offer you a FlexAccount with the following facilities: cash card+
A paragraph at the bottom says 'When we have received this signed letter and any documents we have asked for, we will open your FlexAccount and you will receive your cheque book and card in seven to 10 days.'
The original letter was copied, so if I had any problems, I could complain, so I want into my local branch and was told that my account had no cheque book option. The assistant at the bank wrote a complaint today.
The account is a FlexAccount, as when I use the telephone banking, it says Flexaccount.
Because it says on the letter that I would receive a cheque book, can they still refuse me a cheque book or do they have to send me one?

Cash Card+ means you only got the basic Nationwide current account, so a cheque book might not be available. It'll also mean you don't get a debit card, overdraft and some other things.
Once your account has been open for 7 months, you can request a free upgrade to a FlexAccount, which then gives you the other benefits.0 -
Hi,
A cheque book is not included with any flex-account which is issued a cash-card+ (which is a "on-line" visa debit card). It is based upon credit scoring. Should you wish to ask for an account upgrade - do not assume account conduct will be sufficient alone to move to a "full" flexaccount with "off-line" debit card. You will still be credit scored.
Should you have any defaults or nasty "stains" on your account you may still be refused.
Hope that helps.0 -

If you have sent the relevant, and valid, documents but not received the promised cheque book and card, enquire with Nationwide for the whereabouts of the promised materials. May be you sent your documents late, and things got delayed a bit?
As a matter of interest, why do you want a cheque book when you have a card, and when you can send online payments to anyone who has a UK bank account? The original letter was copied, so if I had any problems, I could complain,
What do you mean by that - who copied the original letter, and why would you need a copy to complain? What would you complain about?0 -
As others have said, if its been opened with a CC+, you won't receive a cheque book. If you've received the normal visa debit (blue card) you should get one, I got mine about a week after the account was opened.0

only 16 right up to the age of before the 18th birthday receive a cheque book with their cc+ .
Unfortunatly you do not receive a chequebook with the adult CC+ account, as long as you show you handle your account well with NO charges / returned direct debits, and have no obvious / continuous defaults it should upgrade after about 1 year, as nationwide checks how you use the account and combine this with regular credit reports... unfortunatly unlike lloyds and barclays , they don't hand out debit card left right and centre.0 -
If this is what it says on your letter, and if you have fulfilled the requirements, you have a right to a "cheque book and card in seven to 10 days".
A right? Doesn't the Nationwide, under the T&Cs, also have a right to vary the lending facilities they offer the account holder? A letter like that isn't a legally binding commitment in any way.
And in any case, " fulfilling the requirements" probably means having a credit record that Nationwide think is of an acceptable level. It sounds in this case that the OP doesn't.0 -

Well, if they had sent me a letter saying they will send me a cheque book once I sent them certain documents..................I would expect a cheque book once I had sent the certain documents (always assuming such documents are valid and acceptable)
If they don't and won't, I would take my business elsewhere since I wouldn't want to engage with a company that brakes their promises.0 -

The account is certainly a Flexaccount, which isn't a basic bank account as Nationwide's basic account is called the Cash card Account. I have just noticed the following in the terms and conditions under part 1:
Mini statements and balance enquiries
31. If you have a Cash Card Account, a FlexAccount with only a cash card+ or a FlexAccount with a cash card+ and cheque book:
(a) requests for mini statements and balance enquiries cannot be made at a Nationwide branch counter;
(b) requests for mini statements and balance enquiries can only be
made at a cash machine (mini statements are available from Nationwide cash machines only) or by using the Internet Bank or Telephone Banking, for which you must be registered. For further information on registering for these services please see our website or contact your branch.
The reason for the cheque book is because I goto a college reunion each year and have to send a deposit in the post and for the last few years, I've been sending postal orders.
I had copy of the original letter done when I went into the branch with my id to open the account. I wantliked a copy of the letter in case I had any queries and any disputes like the cheque book issue.
Also on the online application, it said cheque book option, which I ticked and underneath it stated I would get either a Visa Debit card or Cash Card+ card.

Not necessarily. A Cash Card+ is a VISA debit card, it's just not the full VISA debit card. It's more like the old Electron cards, although they don't call it that, and it won't say Electron on it.0
