I applied to change energy suppliers 2 weeks ago but have been turned down. I'm wondering if someone could decipher this letter please.
Dear so and so
During the process of registering you as a new Manweb electricity customer, we received information about your current metering system from your meter operator.
Unfortunately due to the metering configuration in your premises we currently do not have a suitable compatible pricing arrangement to meet your requirements.
If you still wish to take advantage of the competitive pricing Manweb offers and you have recently had your Off Peak metering removed you should contact your current supplier to have the information updated and we will re-apply for the transfer. If you have recently had your heating systenm upgraded and no longer use your Off Peak supply for heating you should contact your current supplier to have the redundant meter removed.
I have made arrangements for you to stay with your present electricity supplier until you contact us to advise that you have had the meter removed or the information amended above.
Thank you blah blah blah.
We had a new combi boiler fitted 2 years ago but have never had electric heating so am a bit confused.
Any help appreciated, Thanks

Why don't you ask the people who sent you the letter?0

I have tried, they will only speak to the wife as the letter is in her name and she's at work.0

Is manweb still a supplier? I thought they were taken over by Scottish Power.
Anyway, the supplier won't accept your current set up
(nor, I suspect, will any other supplier, except the one already supplying)
I suggest you get your wife to contact her existing supplier to discuss the situation.0 -
If your wife makes the call, and goes through security, she will be able to authorise the call centre to speak to you directly0

Ok, Thanks for your help0

You had the boiler changed that is gas and makes no difference to the incoming electricity supply.
The meter type you have for electricity will have two MPANs registered to it that will be what stopping the transfer. your sitting supplier will be able to advise you about your meter and the MPAN's attached to your property
Your meter may need changed or if it has been changed and the redundant MPAN not de-energised they will be able to do that and will let you change supplier.LBM:j -16/06/04
Debt at highest=£15,526:mad:
Now=£1500:T :T :T0 -
How many MPAN's do you have and are they both charged as the same tariff or as 2 seperate tariffs (standard + off peak)?
Some suppliers can bill any meter out there but some won't.
Its not that they can't take you, its that they don't want your business. Its a difficult issue as suppliers are preventing consumers choosing a supplier by hiding behind this issue.
Suggest speaking to a manager to see if its just something they are trying to avoid taking.
Its a monopoly issue really. You could contact Ofgem's consumer affairs team about it to see what they can advise. It really needs them to intervene and create some licence conditions over it.
MANW doesn't exist anymore...does that letter look OK? It should say who the supplier is. Are they quoting MANW because that's your old region?:rotfl: It's better to live 1 year as a tiger than a lifetime as a worm...but then, whoever heard of a wormskin rug!!!:rotfl:0 -
Hi Call of Trouty,
It is possible that the metering set up in your property still shows as you having some form of electric heating, If this is the case what glasgow_DFW is saying is correct your records held on the central system may still show an antiquated system with 2 mpans that not all suppliers can support. If the case is that you should simply have a one rate meter for electricity then you should be able to change without any issue once the records have been corrected. If you like I can call your current supplier today to see if we can get this updated.
To reassure you, if you live in the Cheshire, Merseyside, N Wales or N Shropshire areas this comes under our Manweb ScottishPower area.

Exactly the same thing happened to me. Our house originally had electric central heating but that was changed to gas in 2003. 2 weeks after we moved in, in 2007, our meter was changed (without us requesting it!), at a guess Seeboard replaced "like for like" so put a dual rate meter in, and that stopped us being able to transfer to Scottish Power.
So, we're still with BG dual fuel, and they've told me that if I want a single rate meter (so I can change supplier if I wish) it will cost me £63.75!
There's my thread on this board "dual rate meter fitted...." which may help you understand.0 -

As British Gas accepted your switch request in the past as your electricity supplier, then any electricity supplier should accept you today
If you have a dual rate electricity meter, some suppliers will only supply you on a dual rate tariff, but they should all accept you as they all offer this type of tariff.
Not the same issue that the OP has.
Edit: Oh I remember, you're the poster who appears to have an incomplete MPAN (20 digits rather than 21). That is possibly the root cause of your issues.0
