DH brought fleas home from work

My DH is a builder and it looks like hes brought fleas home from work  the place hes been working in is a total pit. We've got birds, a budgie and a cockatiel. Hes going to get some spray. Iv'e never had fleas before and not really sure what I should be doing? I don't want my birds to be affected.

Can anyone help?

Oh please be careful using sprays. A friend of mine has just lost her budgie. She is always using air freshener sprays and the plug in things that squirt out a mist every so often, I'm sure it has not done the birds she has had and lost over the years any good at all, they have all seemed to have died early.

I don't know anything about birds and fleas but I wouldn't think that dog/cat/human fleas live on birds, might be wrong though.
I would contact a vet, or ring the PDSA or RSPCA for advice on how to tackle them in the house.

If they say sprays are ok around birds, Indorex - can get it online - is supposed to be one of the best. Please ask a vet's advice first though.
There are some vets that come on this forum, they might be able to tell you.

Fleas are specific to the species, dog or cat fleas won't live/ breed on the birds or humans (tho they can bite you). Read the instructions on the product you choose, read the company's website or e-mail them directly to see what is safe to use when you keep birds. Can you get the birds out of the house whilst you treat it? Indorex and Acclaim are the most often recommended for dog and cat fleas so might be worth researching those?

You will need to hot wash all your partners' clothing and equipment, spray anywhere he went with his clothing on, and as much else as you can because the eggs can be transported on feet. Normally we would advise you to move all your furniture, but you might get away with not, the fleas won't be breeding in your house unless you have picked up bird or human fleas. Don't forget to spray inside his work van or car.

When treating your house, you will need to move the birds so treat every room bar one and keep the birds in there for a few hours. Then when you put them back, you can treat the last room.

  • please get the birds out of the house or into kitchen with closed door and well ventilated window to outside. birds are highly sensitive and really could die from flea spray.
use indorex , if you do it right it protects for a year, after buying a kitten with fleas i tried everything but only indorex worked and havent seen a flea since thankgod.

Ive got birds too so apreciate you cant get them outiside if raining and too cold now etc but please dont spray near them, it really is dangerous to them.
fingers crossed you get rid of the fleas as they are evil:(

So how is your husband getting from A to B? The adult fleas will die off without the right type of blood to feed on, the eggs are the concern. IMO speak to the manufacturers of the products to see what is safe, get it from the horse's mouth.

Best bet would be to bin the work clothes imho & whatever you do,stay away from supermarket flea treatments, especially Bob Martins, which CAN be dangerous.
  • we have lovebirds and two rosellas:o

we are in middle of building aviary but so expensive...:(

you may notice fleas up to a week but they should be dying off , I did my house again in aug as had been a year since i last saw some but as it said it lasts a year i thought prevention was better than cure and two of the cats go out with their little cat mates from around the block so i never trust what they may bring in, even if they have been frontlined it doesnt stop a flea catching a ride...see once you have had one you become ever so slighlty paranoid:eek::rotfl:.

fingers crossed they have gone and you dont need to spray poor hubby:)
