What's the point of 4G?

  • I'd be happy just to get decent coverage. Where I live I would say 80% of the place I visit on Vodafone my S3 displays G or E. I wouldn't even bother anything internet based unless its on at least 3G but H is better. I've only ever seen H+ once.

I hope they do a better job of rolling out 4G than they have of 3G.

I can see me cancelling the direct debit to them and moving to 3 because this is just no good.

Because they haven't.. I'm just talking about the general downward tendency.

Do you expect the 4G contracts / price plans will offer more?

I made the same point as the op here a week or two ago and am still sceptical about limits being raised significantly compared to today's 3G limit. Of course I have no evidence to base this feeling on but it is just that I can't put it past the networks to try and pull a fast one on their customers.

If half of what EE are offering/advertising on their website is true data allowance will have to increase ten-fold. Some of their statements:
The waiting is over. Watch TV, make video calls, play live multiplayer games and stream films on the move. All on superfast 4GEE from EE.
Don’t wait till you’re home or in the office to download chunky apps, films or emails. With superfast 4GEE you can do it all on the go.

Who knows what the price plans will cost, but imagine the data used in a couple of hours streaming TV a day, watch a film a day, download a film a day....

50GB a month wouldn't be enough to do the above.

Rollout of LTE is to cover 98% of the population which is the same as 2G is now, you will probably never get 3G but (at least on EE) you should have LTE by 2014, as they are aiming 70% by (I assume end of) 2013 and 98% by (end of) 2014.

There was always problems with 3G trying to cover rural areas, it's high 2100MHz means it just can't travel the distances, LTE can use the 800MHz band so can cover the rural areas no problem.
