Using a Blackberry abroad.

Hi.

I have searched but can't find what I want. I have a bb and am of to Spain tomorrow.

I know I need to switch off data and mobile roaming to save charges. Will bbm work or not? I am with orange. Spent 40 mins on hold to them earlier to ask but gave up.

I am not planning on using he phone so haven't bought a bundle it will just be the odd text.

This is the first time I have taken it abroad so sorry if I sound thick but if I turn the roaming off it won't check for emails either will it?

Anything else I need to do so I don't return to a huge bill

Thanks

Sam

  • I can't answer the question on BBM, but if roaming is off then your phone will NOT check for emails as you effectively won't have any phone coverage, however if you connect to WiFi then it would.

Not unless you connect to WiFi. However, I think you can switch only data roaming off, not the entire mobile roaming that is activated/deactivated by your network on your request.

You won't if data roaming is switched off.

Usually huge bills are a result of data roaming charges, but without any bundles there is €50 limit in place unless you opt out from it.
  • if your with tmobile you can get a world roamer bundle for a month for 12 which allow you access to the internet at no extra charge ( not phone calls of course just the internet )

i have one on mine as i travel loads and its worth every penny i keep mine on all the time and its saved me a small fortune

also switch off your voicemail otherwise that can rack up extra cost if people call you
  • The original post is for Orange network.

I think BBM would work when connected to Wifi with data switched off on the phone.
