home phone and broadband sky or plusnet?

Options
I'm currently with Post Office home phone and O2 broadband which the contract is ending soon will cost a bit dearer to renew. Sky seem to have unlimited broadband which sounds appealing and Plusnet don't only 10 gig Which I can work on if I can set the speeds and not go over the limit. I like to stream videos and surf the net. Don't know what their service is like so the question is which company do I go with?

If you stream a lot, then Plusnet's 10gig won't be nearly enough (unless you stream after midnight - this is unlimited with Plusnet).

I also find Plusnet can sometimes seem too slow for good streaming, but this may just be where I live.

We have Sky Unlimited BB & home phone. Our household enjoys online gaming, BBC iplayer & Netflix. Often all at the same time depending if everyone is home. No buffering issues at all

Plusnet do a 60Gb monthly allowance too if you're prepared to pay extra. Have found their service pretty much faultless, but do agree 10Gb might not be enough. 4 of us get through 50Gb + per months without that much streaming. Due to my location, max speed I can get is 8Gb, and haven't seen any speed change between the 3 suppliers I've ha in recent years.
  • I have just moved from Plusnet to Sky. I was with Plusnet for a year, but found the download limit too restricting even though I am an early riser and was often on before the 8am free download cut-off time.

Plusnet did offer me unlimited access for around £20 per month, but I have had Sky TV for over 10 years without any major issues, and was seduced by their offer of 6 months free access, £45 cashback and £25 M&S vouchers.

To be honest I wish I hadnt moved. The switch went smoothly, cashback tracked, vouchers arrived, BUT the connection is really unstable. It will be fine for a while then suddenly keep dropping.

I then belatedly looked at the Sky customer forums and it seems a lot of other people have issues with this. Sky advise you to try switching wireless channels, which I have, but it hasnt improved much and I feel shouldnt really need to be faffing around. I cant honestly be bothered to spend hours on the phone to them either.

If you can work round the download limit I would say Plusnet are a much better option. It might also be worth checking for any cashback deals etc that they have on offer.
  • Something to look out for is that the price advertised is not the price you pay. Whilst trying to sign up for my daughter the final total had an additional £2.50 a month added when I queried this they said it was because I wasnt having ther TV I expressed by surprise at having to pay for Not having something When I asked where this additional cost was advertised Sky themselves took 10 mins to find it hidden in the Terms & Conditions The ycount on people not looking at the final total before pushing the button. I used my consumer weapon and went elsewhere.
  • I've just moved from Sky LLU to Plusnet mainly because I've dropped Sky TV and was not prepared to pay the premium to keep their BB.

I was recommended Plusnet by a friend (you get good referral rates) and there was the added bonus that I could keep my number.

Yes 60GB can be restrictive, but I schedule downloads in the "free" overnight window and my first month has just finished well under the 60gb but a lot in the free window.

Cannot fault the service so far, speed is a little better than Sky (I had DLM issues which lost me speed) but it is marginal.

I'm just waiting for fibre to come next year and as Plusnet is a BT product I should have more choice when it does.
