Applying for credit card - why do they want your account details

Hello

I am looking at getting as Asda credit card but in order to apply for one they want my bank account details. is this normal? I am always reluctant to give out my bank details especially when it is an online application

    They need to identify you.

  • It might be harsh, but if you not happy to provide the details do not apply. Simple!

    Card issuers ask for information because they need it for various things, some are mandatory and some are optional. Unfortunately a [potential] can't change that

    Its usually to set up a direct debit - is this a phone application or online? you could ring them and ask them why they need them.

  • Yes i have an asda credit card currently but they are closing this one down as they are changing the bank that they use for their credit cards

    Gone are the days of keeping ones cash in a mattress and most people have some sort of bank account these days.

    It is a way of proving who you are and that you can handle something as simple as a current account and set up payments.

    If you are worried about applying online for a bank or building society's credit card then I suggest you don't bother and keep your money in a sock under the bed!!

    If you don't trust your own internet connection then go into a branch personally, but again be careful out there.
