    Do you work for a large company, or is the boss the boss with nobody above him?
    Are you prepared to put a grievance in about it?

    You will have a grievance procedure use that if you feel you are being picked on. Also check your absence policy, you will have written down management guidance for absence However, you could try just asking why he feels he has the right to challenge you. Refer to managers guidance and policy where appropriate. No doubt you have a doctors note covering you for the period of sickness.

    No sorry you are overreacting, no employer likes people having time off and often remarks are made,thats part of life Im afraid. Its not like he made a nasty remark when someone was on their deathbed or something.
    You either suck it up or get out. If you start putting in grievaces then you will be targetted.Thats how it is from my observations.
    You wont walk out ! lol.

    He asked one member of staff to make up the time she had taken off to look after her ill son even though we have a family friendly policy.

    If this is the case he needs to be reminded that he is also an employee like everyone else and there is a policy he needs to comply with.

    Inform local reps as they should have the ear of management and may feel the need to raise this at a suitable level to ensure he operates within policy.

    It would annoy me if I'm being honest. I have to go for surgery in October and have had to use a week's holiday entitlement to attend. No employer likes staff of sick and I fully understand that but when you can't have time off to recuperate after surgery beggers belief. It's not like your off with a headache!
  • Think of it this way - he's probably getting pressure from above him to mae sure sick absence is minimised. It sounds like he phrased it very badly but I think the what he asked is reasonable for a manager - it's his job to make sure that people are only off if they need to be.

    As for family friendly policies, they have to be policed just like sick absence to make sure people only take what's appropriate and reasonable. There might be circumstances with the woman who was asked to make up the time that you don't know about - she can say what she wants about it but a manager has to keep his/her side of things confidential

    I've heard of employers doing this with elective surgery (cosmetic/gastric bands etc) but assuming your surgery is medically neccessary, making you take leave is appalling :(
