Stove installers in Sunderland???

Well, I'm pretty fed up. Building work done, hole opened, stove ready to in.

Can we get anyone to fit the damn thing at a reasonable price? No because they want to screw us over and sell us 6metres of liner and a register plate for £400. Why can't we find anyone in the area who will match the liner cost we can find or use liner we supply?

Then labour on top ( a one story cottage).

I realise it's a skilled job but why can't these guys be happy with being paid a fair days wage for a fair days work.

We might be forced down the DIY route becasue of this. Can anyone recommend a good stove installer on one of the competent persons schemes in the North East before I scream. PS because I'm a woman home alone with a baby they do me the extra courtesy of talking to me like I'm stupid on top. Then act all shirty when I explain, nicely, what we want.

I want a fair job for a fair price. Can anyone help?
I'll have some cheese please, bob.

  • Hi Mizzbiz,

Sorry to hear you problems. I can't recommend anyone I'm afriad as I'm down south, but if its any consolation, read thread I've just put up headed 'Twin Wall Flue & Stove - Is it worth the hassel?' It may cheer you up to hear other peoples problems concerning installs!;). This whole lark of using Hetas registered installers seems a rip off. I know there are good, honest installers out there, but I think since this regulation came in, and having a woodburner became a trendy thing to do, there are a lot of cowboys Hetas installers out there who think they can charge what they like, for work thats not even necessary! (I too had installers talking to me like I only had two brain cells as well!)

Would an alternative be to get a builder, (or anyone who is good at DIY) to do it, and just get your local building regs to sign it off? I think they charge about £100, but it still might work out cheaper if you've bought the flue & bits yourself. (You also don't always need a flue if your chimney is in good nic. Again, I think Building Regs would be able to tell you if you needed one or not)

Hope it all works out for you. There is nothing better than sitting in front of a roaring fire, but it seems a darn hassel to get to that stage these days!!!

Missbiz - you can get any reputable builder to do the work for you if you cant find an installer.

You can then get it signed off by your local council Building Inspector.

So you know what is going off and what is needed download a copy of Part J building regs http://www.planningportal.gov.uk/buildingregulations/approveddocuments/partj/
It is also very important that you make access for sweeping, some stoves you can sweep from the inside so theres no need to worry with that, some stoves you cant so you might need an access in the flue pipe....check the stove to see if the internal baffle is removeable.
You may click thanks if you found my advice useful

I'm afraid leaving it until Autumn hasn't helped things. This is the busiest and most lucrative time of year for sweeps and installers.

If you go down the DIY route, I can recommend this company in Gateshead for your liner etc.

    http://www.ncc-flue.co.uk/flexible-flue-liners/for-wood-burning-stoves/155mm-6/flex-lengths/multifuel-flex-liner-904-904-155mm.html

I would go with the 904 grade liner even if you only intend to burn wood as it is better able to withstand the corrosive nature of combustion products. Especially smokeless fuels. As you live in a single storey dwelling it should only be a few meters of flue pipe, register plate cost me a fiver sheared to size by a local sheet metal co. Frame for register plate fabricated by myself. Advice free from many people on this forum!

By the way, I have no connection to the above company.
