Marrying abroad

Go for it!! We did it 15 years ago and didnt invite anybody. Met another couple doing the same thing so they took the pics / shot video for us. Rep very helpful. Totally indulged ourselves - total expense about 3k. Next to no stress whatsoever. Worked for us as we have never desired being in the limelight. Families naturally dissapointed - but they soon got over it! Far too expensive the traditional way these days.0

There is always gretna green!
Whatever you do, you can always have an informal buffet style party to celebrate afterwards (week, month, year) then people can choose their own seating partners and if it all goes pear shaped, you haven't ruined your actual wedding day.7 Angel Bears for LovingHands Autumn Challenge. 10 KYSTGYSES. 3 and 3/4 (ran out of wool) small blanket/large square, 2 premie blankets, 2 Angel Claire Bodywarmers0 -
We got married in the Austrian Alps in June 2004.... We had a great day and some beautiful photo's taken by the waterfall in Bad Gastein and with the mountains as a backdrop. In total it costs around 4,000 pounds and that paid for wedding ceremony, music, photo's, transport to Bad Gastein (Vintage Rolls Royce for DH and me, mini bus for others), hair and makeup for my sister and me, cake, food etc..... We paid for five to travel (flights and accomm). We booked through Weddings Abroad and the co-ordinator lived locally to us.... We had a party about a month after our wedding.....

I would just caution that some hotels tend to operate like a production line - check how many other wedding would be held on the same day.
Excellent point, which reminded me of when I stayed in Cyprus last September. We stayed at the Capo Bay hotel in Protaras, & they held no more than 3 weddings per day - one at 11am, 1pm & 3pm. Beautiful hotel, gorgeous grounds, & a few steps from the crystal clear beach, highly recommended.
Forgot to add that we also had a celebration party when we returned, which kept 'most' people happy!
Keep us updated, I'd love to know where you end up going!

I know somebody who got married in Cyprus and I'm sure they did it because they did not want family members there. This backfired because all but a few saved up and went. Saying that it was a brilliant time and it's still talked about now.
Personally I didn't consider it for my wedding because I think it is unfair to family members who can't make it for one reason and another and I know some would be really upset.
Each to own, the wedding day is your and your partners day and should be what you want and not what best pleases others.Regards,
Dave

How about Gibraltar? We had a wonderful time there - admittedly about 20 years ago but it was very civilised (and English). I think we had to have about 3 days residency before the service but that was no hardship and then we went back to Spain for a long honeymoon.0

I got married in the Bahamas some 14 years ago. Went away because my hubby's family were total *******! Unfortunately got divorced 5 yrs ago but if I ever were to marry again would definitely do it abroad. Had a really lovely day. I went with Airtours and we had our very own wedding planner in the UK and one in the Bahamas when we got there. We had to be resident in the country for 3 days and got married on the 4th. We did spend one whole day of our holiday 'arranging' the wedding whereby we visited the registrar general and signed some legal forms, then we had to go to the local florist to choose my bouquet. I got marriet at 11.00 in the morning in the orchid gardens, wore a traditional wedding dress and had an absolutely fabulous time. Good luch whatever you decide.0

can i ask a question - GirlRacer just out of interest how do you get divorced if you got married in another country? can you do it here or do you have to do it through the country where you got married. Not that intend to get divorced! but I always wondered. It also always worried me slightly that there is no "official" record of us being married here in the UK, only in Mexico, is there any way you can get this registered does anyone know?DON'T WORRY BE HAPPY

Hi - my DH and I married in the Carribean in 1998.
No family - just us, it was fab. The day was dead relaxed - pottered, swam in the morning, had my hair done (pick a hotel with a beauty spa if you want a bit of pampering!), then changed and were married - then spent the rest of the day grinning like cheshire cats ! When we got back to the UK we had a small party for friends and family - so I got to wear my dress twice!!!
I was relaxed - so was DH, we had a great day and it didn't cost that much on top of the holiday - I think was about £250. My dress was from Monsoon in the sale. DH hired suit for duration of holiday. Photos were additional £60 - for 60 photos, plus all the negs.
Def check out how many weddings are being held - when we married there were just two per day - two hours apart.
nadnad - as far as I know you can not have your wedding registered here once it has been registered elsewhere. If the certificate is in another language - you should have been advised to have a certified translation in to English. We had two copies done.... just in case!
As for divorce - it makes no difference whether you married at home or abroad, however you will need to have your wedding certificate translated if it is any other language and this is what gets lodged with the court as your 'Petition for divorce'
