some questions about bank accounts for poor past credit

Following a period of extended hospitalisation and illness where so much of my life fell apart, I have a poor credit rating.
I have a CCJ from early 2010.
I also have 5 defaults from early 2010.
Also on my credit report I have about 6 accounts that are up to date or settled/paid satisfactorily. I am on the Electoral Roll.
I have managed to get a basic account with Nationwide and I am very grateful for it.
A friend recommended I might get a Natwest Step Account as a backup as well. I applied for it today. The message that came up is that I've been accepted for the Step but that they could also offer me Select, Silver Select or Advantage Gold.
I clicked to go for the Select. It said it had been accepted. It asked me whether I required an overdraft limit. I clicked yes just to see. The message that came up was that I have not been approved for an overdraft (hardly surprising!).

It seems strange that Natwest would approve me for a Select account. Isn't that a full current account? Is this some type of cruel joke?

I checked my credit file and it shows that Natwest did a full search (not just ID check) on my Equifax file at the time of my application.

What risk are natwest taking in giving you a current account with no credit facilities?

I'd read that people with poor credit found it really hard to get a current account anywhere?

Of late it seems natwest have been very lenient with their current accounts as many posters with not the best credit files have been accepted 'once again no overdraft.

It is still possible that they'll refuse to keep the account open, once it's been reviewed. So leave the celebrations a few days.

    You'll be fine.

What about AVU? NatWest/RBS were notorious for accepting then closing down accounts a few years ago unless you were an existing customer?

No only Barclays & Lloyds for me.

They might of been notorious a while back but going by the evidence of some of the posters on here they've become very lenient.
