some questions about bank accounts for poor past credit

Following a period of extended hospitalisation and illness where so much of my life fell apart, I have a poor credit rating.
I have a CCJ from early 2010.
I also have 5 defaults from early 2010.
Also on my credit report I have about 6 accounts that are up to date or settled/paid satisfactorily. I am on the Electoral Roll.
I have managed to get a basic account with Nationwide and I am very grateful for it.
A friend recommended I might get a Natwest Step Account as a backup as well. I applied for it today. The message that came up is that I've been accepted for the Step but that they could also offer me Select, Silver Select or Advantage Gold.
I clicked to go for the Select. It said it had been accepted. It asked me whether I required an overdraft limit. I clicked yes just to see. The message that came up was that I have not been approved for an overdraft (hardly surprising!).
It seems strange that Natwest would approve me for a Select account. Isn't that a full current account? Is this some type of cruel joke?
I checked my credit file and it shows that Natwest did a full search (not just ID check) on my Equifax file at the time of my application.

I'd read that people with poor credit found it really hard to get a current account anywhere?0 -

that is good news

It is still possible that they'll refuse to keep the account open, once it's been reviewed. So leave the celebrations a few days.0

What about AVU? NatWest/RBS were notorious for accepting then closing down accounts a few years ago unless you were an existing customer?0 -

No only Barclays & Lloyds for me.
They might of been notorious a while back but going by the evidence of some of the posters on here they've become very lenient.0
