Am investigating costs of getting extended warranty before splashing out on a new phone. Can anyone clear up my confusion between Apple's 'One-Year Limited Warranty' and the '2 years (minimum)' claim period under EU Consumer Law?
My naive thoughts would be that a problem with the phone between years 1 and 2 would be covered under EU Law, thus Apple (or whoever supplies the phone) are liable to repair / replace it during that period? If that's the case - why buy extra cover ?

The supplier has an obligation to repair any fault under the following legislation:
- Section 48B of the Sale of Goods Act 1979 if the goods are not supplied in conjunction with a service.
- Section 11N of the Supply of Goods and Services Act 1982 if the goods are supplied in conjunction with a service, e.g. by the mobile network.

In UK you have up to 6 years to claim under the Sale of the Goods Act, but this normally involves court actions. Even after 6 months it is you who has to prove that it isn't a result of some damage or wear/tear and that the item was faulty at the time of the purchase.
So, in short, if your want 2 years, shell our extra £60ish(?).0 -
Thanks for those replies - kind of what I thought, but it still rankles that one has to pay £60 to speed up the process of claiming (for manufacturer faults). Let's face it, most 'claims' arise from misuse, rather than an inherent fault that only arises after a year (would love to know the stats...)
Perhaps I'm being a 'tightwad', given that the £60ish also covers for accidents and towards theft.
But then, saving money IS the philosophy of this site....

I bought an iPad 1 with the 1 year standard warranty, the Wifi & Bluetooth stopped working after 18 months.
So I bought a new iPad 3 from John Lewis because they offered a free 2yr warranty, but not sure if they sell iPhones.
However I was told to take my old iPad to Apple which I did the other day and they offered me a replacement iPad 1 (same spec) for the cost of the repair, comes with a 90 day warranty so I took it. However if I'd had Apple Care they would of replaced it for free.
For an iPhone I'd take out Apple Care and check if its covered on your home insurance (if not see if you can add it), but I won't bother with 3rd party extended warranties or shop warranties (ie PC World, Comet etc), just go straight for Apple Care.0
