i had the same prob with barcalys...i just applied every three months.
eventually i got a connect card, and now a student account.
give them a break, a minus balance is a minus balance- stop wanting to shout at them or even reason with them...just wait a few months.
EDIT to put it another way, sometimes it is easier to just wait...of course maybe someone will override it and get you the card.Err, I'll get back to you about the funny signature0 -
as for keeping you in the dark about being overdrawn...its your responsibility.
i found banking with barclays easier once i accepted that i had to follow my account...they would not do it for me though they would be happy to withhold connect status etc

its not that i cant bank properly because i can, but when you open an account after being told that you cant go overdrawn you assume that is correct, but also natwest would either call or email when i went overdrawn unauthorised, you would assume that other banks would do the same, ill try the waiting game, unless i find a better deal, thanks for all the help0

So you have had 2 accounts with different banks both o/d without authority - not really in a good position to argue are you??

no, i had an account with natwest, in days of old, i mean about 4 years ago (probabaly more) and they sent a notice saying i went overdrawn, my mum went in and sorted it out and nothing happened, it wasnt my fault anyway, its along story, barclays did not tell me when i had, i just do not think its right if they do not tell you0

most banks dont have the staff capacity to inform each customer when they have gone overdrawn.
on a typical day i probably take around 75-80 calls and around 10% of those people will have incurred charges.
my say 7 customer multplied by hundreds of colleagues adds up to a heck of a lot of customers needing informed.. where do we find the extra staff to do this?I have seen various stories of people with Electron and Solo cards who have managed to go slightly overdrawn (ie, simply drop below £0). I don't know how true they are, but it seems to make sense that the system does have its faults here and there - I think you will find it is possible in certain situations to go overdrawn, but that Electron and Solo stop overspending in the huge majority of cases.
its not a system fault. card holder spends money they dont have. retailer authorises it (without checking with the bank). money is collected a few days later, account goes overdrawn.

Fair enough - but this should be made very clear to people - especially when these cards are often targetted at the under 18s and financially vulnerable. For example, they often say in the literature something like 'and we'll check your balance each time to make sure that you can't go overdrawn' - so why shouldn't people take them at their word?0 -
they do check the balance every time. IF asked to by the retailer.
if the retailer authorises the transaction through their own system the bank doesnt know about it until it is collected at which point the bank cannot refuse it.
i appreciate your point but t&c's also state not to use your card/cheq bk unless you have available funds. this is made clear and ignored on many occasions

right, well it looks like it was my fault then, but as im sure it seems, it should be pointed out, i cant see it requiring a member of staff to write to everyone who this happens to, mail merging is simple and requires only one person, i think im going to wait and see what the student offers i like from different banks and BS's then i might move, thanks everyone for your help0

Customers logging-in regularly to check their bank or building society account balance can also have pleasant surprises. An unexpected credit may have occurred - perhaps a dividend payment from a small holding of shares received when a bdg soc converted into a bank...or annual interest from a savings account automatically sent via BACS. Or indeed interest on the actual account itself.
Regular log-in also equips the customer to check for possible debits done by criminals (hopefully highly unlikely, but just possible).
