Fridge dead and taken away!

Tuesday an engineer checked Mums fridge and has said a new one will be delivered within five days. She has only had the fridge four months.

Now she has no fridge, Easter is coming, had no phone call from Comet yet about delivery.

Should I check out if there is any compensation ?

Why would there be compensation? Sounds like they are giving a new fridge which meets their commitments? Yes this is a minor inconvenience but we do not get compensated for minor inconveniences .. we get compensated for actual loss. I would suggest that you get in contact with Comet and ask them for a delivery date .. if they can not provide a direct replacement then insist on a temporary loan of soemthing until the propoer one can be sourced.

You have to remember though that when they say 5 days they could mean 5 working days which could take you up to next Thursday.

    Thanks IvanOpinion

It is being without a fridge over Easter that is more concerning than any compensation

It's unfortunate that it has gone wrong at this time but as they are doing what they are legally required to do, there's not much else you can ask for.

I would agree with Ivan that it might be best to get a delivery date set with Comet so you know what's what.

I suppose the only potential claim for compensation would be if she had lost items which were in the fridge and had spoiled due to the fault/not having a fridge, but if the engineer was booked in advance they may say that she had time to make alternative arrangements.
It may be worth asking if they would offer anything - I am sure they can appreciate that it is an annoying situation, and there may be something they can do, but it may just be a case of unfortunate timing!

If food was spoiled due to breakdown of a fridge under warranty there may be a paragraph that offers limited compensation on production of receipts or your mum may have this cover in her home insurance. As others have said it's still within the time frame they said so it's unlikely you would get anywhere looking for compensation at this stage.

People used to manage without fridges but they have become a essential item these days, funny because food has never been easier to get hold of in this age of 24 hour supermarkets.

Dont know about Comet, but Dixons will compensate for food spoilage etc. I had a problem whereby they damged my new FF on delivery. They wanted to set it up and replace it within 4 weeks. Of course, this meant that when the new one was delivered it would have to stand for 5 hours after they had taken the old one so all food would be lost.

I telephoned them and they did say that claims for food loss will be considered.

As it happened I didnt need to claim because they finally saw the light and just replaced the damaged door.

You may be able to claim consequential losses if food has been spoiled due to a fault in the fridge, yes. You would need to be able to quantify this somehow, i.e. produce the packaging to show what food was in the fridge at the time, so it can be worked out roughly what costs there would have been.

Well, I want to thank you all for replies, much appreciated.

I phoned up yesterday to find out what's happening. As it is a Zanussi-Electrolux fridge, they are the one's who are arranging the delivery of the new fridge. The paperwork had not been processed yet so delivery date still unknown.

All I can say is just as well Mum is not having a houseful of guests over Easter. One good thing is she is drinking lots of milk so it does not go off !

Mum doesn't keep much in the fridge but knew something was amiss when the cheese went mouldy. Not much to be compensated for there then.

I would have thought it good practice to leave someone with a second hand fridge. Mum will be without a fridge for at least a week now.

Should add for good measure, the fridge that konked out was by Prestige and bought in 1958. It lasted 588 months while the new fridge lasted 4. Built 'em to last in those days.
